Another tired hair style

The Spokesman-Review

NBA players are prohibited from using their uniforms for advertising, but that hasn’t kept Richard Hamilton from using the hair on his head.

The Detroit Pistons guard is styling it so it matches the tread pattern of Goodyear’s Assurance Triple Tred tire. Bloomberg News reports Hamilton made an endorsement deal with Goodyear that includes free tires and an unspecified amount of money.

Goodyear spokesman Ed Markey said his company chose Hamilton because “the way he plays fits nicely with the product – confident maneuvering, handles well in all conditions.”

But teammates have been complaining that Hamilton looks tired.

No, not that Tom Brady

It’s tough being Tom Brady in Philadelphia these days, but Thomas A. Brady is doing his best.

Brady, 33, an orthodontist with offices in West Chester and Exton, Pa., has slapped the Brady name on the back of an Eagles jersey. Just to be sure no one confuses him with that other Tom Brady – you know, the one from New England who wears No. 12 and who has never (yet) lost a postseason game – Thomas A. has the No. 9 on his jersey.

Like other Tom Bradys in this football-crazed town, Thomas A. knows he risks silly jokes at best and outright ridicule at worst just because his parents happened to give him the same name as you-know-who from you-know-where.

Other Tom Bradys have learned to take advantage of the situation. Thomas R. Brady, 63, a Marine and Air Force veteran from Horsham, Pa., said when he called a hotel for military personnel in Florida, “the girl who answered got all excited, thinking she was talking to Tom Brady from the football team.”

He said after hinting that there might in fact be some connection, “we did get a really good deal.”

Desperate measures

Detroit Red Wings forward Brendan Shanahan might switch from hockey to lacrosse if the NHL season is canceled.

Shanahan practiced with the National Lacrosse League’s Toronto Rock last week.

He is a part owner of the Rock and played lacrosse as a teenager.

He’s must have the voice for it

Los Angeles Kings announcer Bob Miller is out of work because of the NHL lockout.

“I’ll make this short,” Miller said in accepting an award at a banquet. “Kmart wants me back for my greeter’s job.”

Heard this one before

Alabama booster and Memphis businessman Logan Young was convicted of bribery in connection with the pursuit of recruit Albert Means. During the trial, Lynn Lang, Means’ high school coach, testified that he accepted $150,000 from Young to persuade Means to sign with Alabama in 2000.

David Climer of the Nashville Tennessean wrote that Young’s defense was “based, at least in part, on the oldest excuse in the book. I’m sure there’s a legal term for it, but most of us know it as the ‘Well, I had been drinking quite a bit when I said … ‘ alibi.”

The last word

From Jay Leno: “I guess you heard there was a mix-up in the Iraqi election. Apparently, by mistake, a lot of ballots were switched with NBA All-Star ballots and now the new president of Iraq is Yao Ming.”
