Gonzaga University point guard Derek Raivio has been named the West Coast Conference men’s basketball player of the week for his role in helping the Bulldogs move into a first-place tie with Saint Mary’s.

He scored 19 points in Thursday’s win over league-leading Saint Mary’s to pull the Bulldogs into the tie, then recorded his first career points-assists double-double with 19 points and 10 assists in GU’s win over Santa Clara on Saturday.

Also in the win over Saint Mary’s, he tied the school record for most consecutive free throws made in a season at 41 before missing the record-breaking attempt.

For the week, he averaged 19 points, 7.0 assists and shot 58 percent from the field (11 of 19), including 50 percent from beyond the 3-point arc (6 of 12). He also posted a 4.7-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Women’s basketball

Gonzaga University senior forward Ashley Burke was named the West Coast Conference player of the week after leading the Bulldogs to road wins at Saint Mary’s and Santa Clara.

Burke averaged 18 points a game, including a season-high 23 against Santa Clara. She also pulled down six rebounds per game while shooting 11 of 21 from the floor.

Gonzaga has won 16 games in a row, the nation’s longest active winning streak, while improving their record to 20-2, 9-0 in the WCC. Burke increased her season numbers to 13.5 points and 5.4 rebounds per game while shooting 51.2 percent from the floor for the season.

The Bulldogs return to action Thursday night at 7 when they play host to Pepperdine at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

College baseball

Gonzaga junior right-hander Josh Monroe is the West Coast Conference pitcher of the week after opening the season with a 3-1 victory over Oregon State last weekend at the Bob Schaefer Memorial in Tempe, Ariz.

The Woodinville, Wash., native pitched six scoreless innings, giving up just three hits and one walk, while striking out six.

Track and field

Idaho multi-event athlete Manuela Kurrat was named the Western Athletic Conference indoor track and field athlete of the week for her performance at the McDonald’s Collegiate Meet on Feb. 4.

The senior from Halle, Germany, won the pentathlon with an NCAA-automatic qualifying mark of 4,061 points, the second-best mark in the country, the best mark in the WAC and an Idaho school record. Kurrat set personal bests in each of the five events.

The Vandals indoor track and field teams have been invited to join the WAC one year early. Idaho and Utah State will both be competing in the WAC indoors and the Big West outdoors this season.
