Paul Stone named distinguished elementary principal

Mullan Road Elementary School Principal Paul Stone has been named the Dick Stannard Distinguished Elementary Principal of the Year for Spokane Public Schools. The award is named after a well-respected Spokane principal who died of cancer in 1996.

Every year the Spokane Elementary Principals Association nominates an elementary principal, based on leadership, resource development, interpersonal skills, and student achievement. Stone is now a candidate for the Washington State Principal of the Year.

“I found out about it before school one day. I walked into the library and my whole staff was there, my wife was there, Dr. Benzel was there. I was completely shocked,” said Stone, referring to Spokane Public Schools Superintendent Brian Benzel.

Stone, 54, said that being a school principal has always been his dream. He has been an elementary school principal for 12 years.

He has served as president for the Spokane Elementary Principals Association and is the past president of the Elementary School Principals Association of Washington.

Stone grew up in Portland, Maine. He graduated from Aurora College, near Chicago, and began his teaching career there.

Stone earned his master’s degree from Arizona State University. He taught fifth and sixth grades there for 10 years before moving to Spokane where he taught in the Mead School District for 10 years.

Stone and his wife, Sunny, a kindergarten teacher at Brentwood, have been married for 27 years and have a son, Andy, and a daughter, Katie.
