Colfax boys, girls earn state 1A berths with district tourney wins

Erik Wick made one of two free throws with 8 seconds left in the game, sending Colfax to the state 1A boys basketball tournament with a 53-51 win over Kettle Falls in a loser-out game at Mead.

The Bulldogs (9-14) used a 15-0 run on their way to the state berth. Wick scored all 12 of his points in the second half, including 4 of 6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

Ben Aune’s 13 led Colfax, and Kettle Falls (13-10) was led by Zac Barber’s game-high 21 points.

District 7 2A

Cards upset Stags in OT

Ali Nelson’s clutch free-throw shooting gave No. 6 seed Medical Lake a 70-67 upset-win over No. 3 Deer Park.

The visiting Cardinals (7-15) took the lead with 5 seconds to play, but then fouled Deer Park’s Laura Gibson in the backcourt. She made one of her two free throws, sending the game into overtime.

In the extra period, Nelson was perfect from the line (4-4), including two in the final 20 seconds, securing the three-point win for her team. Richelle Daily led Medical Lake with 20 points. The Stags (15-6) saw their season come to an end despite Gibson’s team-high 20. The Cardinals continue district play with a contest on Friday at Chewelah. … Lakeside 57, Pullman 45: Lakeside took a 24-19 halftime lead and never looked back, downing visiting Pullman 57-45. Kia Gibson led the Eagles (17-5) with 13 points and seven rebounds. Lakeside also had Tiffany Corigliano and Tiffany Thain contribute with 12 points a piece. Jamie Thornton’s 12 points led the Greyhounds (11-11), whose season came to an end with the loss. The Eagles enter double-elimination play on Friday at Riverside.

District 7 1A

Colfax returning to state

For the eighth time in as many seasons, Colfax will be returning to the state tournament–on this occasion it took a little extra time.

The Bulldogs (15-8) outscored the Grizzlies (10-13) 10-4 in the extra stanza for the 63-57 victory in the loser-out game at Mead.

Katie Burns of Colfax hit two free throws with under a minute remaining, tying the game at 53. The Bulldogs regained control of the ball with 25 seconds left, but couldn’t get a shot off. In the extra period, all 10 of Colfax’s points came from the line.

Jordan Harazin (20) and Megan Teade combined for 39 Bulldog points. Maria Barranco led the Grizzlies with 20.

Colfax plays Freeman on Friday at West Valley for state seeding.

District 6 1A

Raiders advance to state

Rhonda St. Pierre’s pair of free throws late in the game sealed Lake Roosevelt’s 53-50 win over host Brewster, giving the Raiders a state berth. Rowena St. Pierre led the Raiders (16-6) with 14 points in the loser-out game, which saw the Bears (16-6) put up 24 fourth-quarter points to almost send the game into overtime. Kyla Evans scored a game-high 27 for Brewster.
