NIC struggles to score in losses

The Spokesman-Review

The North Idaho Cardinals softball team is still looking for their first victory of the 2005 season.

The Cardinals (0-8) dropped a pair of games to the Central Washington Wildcats on Tuesday in Ellensburg, Wash.

Sara Badgley no-hit North Idaho in the opener, allowing only an unearned run, in a 5-1 victory. She struck out 10 and walked six.

Michelle St. John’s sacrifice fly in the fourth inning scored Carly McKinnon for the Cardinals’ only run.

In the nightcap, Kelli Spaulding had three hits and drove in three runs to spark the Wildcats to a convincing 9-1 win.

Kasey Druffel had an RBI triple in the top of the third inning for NIC’s run. The Cardinals finished with three hits.

Junior hockey

The Castlegar Rebels had five different players find the net and breezed to a 5-1 victory over the Spokane Braves in Game 4 of a Kootenay International Junior Hockey League first-round playoff game at Planet Ice.

The victory gives Castlegar a commanding 3-1 lead in the best-of-7 series and a chance to wrap things up at home on Thursday night.

Jarryd Brend, Chad MacKenzie, Peter Evans, Scott Burke and Travis Horcoff all scored for the Rebels, who outshot the Braves 27-18 on the night.

Evan Witt’s second-period goal was the lone tally for Spokane.

Braves goaltender Ryan Skier stopped 18 shots, while Castlegar goalie Graham Fleming turned away 27.

Spokane backup goaltender Jason Greenwell was named Rookie of the Year on Monday.
