Medium-rise buildings will bring more living, retail space to CdA
Lake Coeur d’Alene isn’t going to get any bigger, but the number of people with lakeview places is going to increase. That’s because medium-rise condominium buildings planned for downtown Coeur d’Alene probably will soon be under construction.
Parkside, the name of the nine-story building on the north side of Front Avenue between Sixth and Seventh streets, should be started this spring. And the seven-story condominium planned for 609 Sherman Ave. should be under way this summer.
Both places plan parking and business spaces for the lower floors and residences and penthouses for the upper floors.
The first level of Parkside, west across Seventh Street from its similar, older and bigger sister building, McEuen Terrace, will have an atrium lobby, a public plaza facing the view to the south and 7,500 square feet of retail space. A tenant/owner hasn’t been named.
The level also will have parking for 50 cars opening to the alley on the north.
The second level will have 3,500 square feet for the designing Miller Stauffer Architects, partial owners whose current building on the corner will be one of those torn down to make room for Parkside.
Another 15,000 square feet of commercial space is available.
The third and fourth levels primarily will house NightHawk Radiology, which now is in the Coeur d’Alene North condominiums off Northwest Boulevard.
With plans to expand its work force of 50 employees here, NightHawk uses a team of Australian doctors to provide overnight evaluations of X-ray and CAT scan images for U.S. health care providers.
Levels five, six and seven will each have four residential condos, each floor having three units with three bedrooms and two bathrooms and one with two bedrooms and two baths. All will have balconies overlooking the park and lake.
Three two-story penthouses will occupy the eighth and ninth levels. They’ll have two bedrooms and two bathrooms and large outdoor terraces.
Based on demand, it’s possible the building could be taller. It should be completed by the fall of 2006. For information on commercial or residential space, phone 664-1773.
Ten condos at 609 Sherman
The complex at 609 Sherman Ave., located where the Pre-Press Color building is now, will have two commercial and eight residential condos.
The first floor will have two Sherman Avenue lobbies for the two 2,000-plus-square-foot business/commercial spaces on the second floor. Twelve first-level parking garage spaces will have access to the north alley.
Residential condos occupying the third, fourth and fifth floors will each be 2,200 square feet with options of two or three bedrooms and two bathrooms and decks facing the park and lake. There will be two condos on each floor.
The sixth and seventh floors will house two 3,200-square-foot, two-level penthouses, each with two bedrooms, walk-in closets, two bathrooms and large, landscaped patios.
The building was designed by Patano Architects, and contractor is Mike Dodge. Completion should be next spring. For information, phone 667-7860.
Petal Pushers on Government Way
Anything needed for growing things and a unique assortment of decorating and gift items are available at Petal Pushers Nursery & Garden Center at 1842 Government Way, Coeur d’Alene.
The nursery portion of the business, occupying a bright, 3,000-square-foot building that once housed an ambulance company, emphasizes its North Idaho knowledge and connections.
“We are the growers,” stressed owner Stacey Bishop. “We use our special soil and compost (also sold there) and special ingredients. Our gardening is very seasonal.”
She and manager Cheri Kinzel also will offer gardening classes, including special sessions for children and school projects. The nursery side, with its huge glass-paned doors that will be open in the summer, also has garden art and containers, including frost-free pottery.
The north third of the building – with unique gift items, collectibles, shabby-chic furniture, houseplants, chimes and indoor plants – is guarded by Petal, a 31-pound (yes) housecat. Bishop was originally from Napa, Calif., and came here in 1992 from Soldotna, Alaska.
Hours of operation and the number of employees (now eight) will grow seasonably. They’re now open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Check www.petalpushersnursery.com. Phone 676-0110.
