Wayne Simien had a career-high 32 points and Aaron Miles hit a running layup with 37 seconds to go, lifting No. 8 Kansas to an 81-79 victory over No. 4 Oklahoma State on Sunday in a crisply played game in Lawrence, Kan., that could decide the Big 12 championship.

The old rivals traded basket for basket with the Jayhawks (21-4, 11-3) shooting 66 percent from the field while ending a three-game losing streak. The Cowboys (20-5, 10-4) shot 59 percent in losing its second straight.

Simien had 12 rebounds and was 10 of 11 from the foul line, breaking the school record with 34 consecutive free throws.

John Lucas, one of four senior starters for Oklahoma State, hit his first nine shots but he missed a long 3-point attempt seconds before the final buzzer.

Lucas’ first miss came with 1:31 to go and the game tied at 78. With 37 seconds left, Miles, the Big 12 assists leader, scored the go-ahead basket for an 80-78 lead.

Oklahoma State freshman JamesOn Curry was fouled by Christian Moody and went to the line with 25 seconds left. He made the second free throw to make it a one-point game. Miles was fouled with 19 seconds to go and he hit the second for the 81-79 lead.

After dribbling between the circle for a few seconds, Lucas launched the 3-point attempt that hit the rim.

(2) North Carolina 85, Maryland 83: Raymond Felton made the tiebreaking layup with 19 seconds left and Sean May blocked a shot just before the buzzer as the Tar Heels (24-3, 12-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) weathered a furious comeback bid by the Terrapins (16-10, 7-8) before escaping with a victory in College Park, Md.

May had 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Tar Heels, who remained alone atop the ACC with their fifth straight win.

The Tar Heels led 76-68 with 5 minutes left before the Terrapins used three straight 3-pointers to go up 81-80 with 1:33 to go.

Williams then hit a 3-pointer for North Carolina, but a tip-in by Ekene Ibekwe tied it at 83 with 41 seconds remaining.

After a timeout, Felton drove the left side of the lane and delivered his only basket of the second half. Mike Jones had a chance to tie it for Maryland, but his last-second shot was swatted away by May.

Chris McCray scored a career-high 25 points for Maryland.

(6) Wake Forest 90, Virginia 68: Justin Gray scored 20 points to keep the Demon Deacons (24-4, 11-3) in contention for the ACC title with a victory over the Cavaliers (13-12, 4-10) in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Chris Paul and Eric Williams each scored 17 points for the Demon Deacons, who improved to 15-0 at home this season. Wake Forest is one game behind North Carolina.

But Wake Forest holds the tiebreaker over Carolina, and can earn the top seed in the ACC tournament by winning its final two games and getting one loss from the Tar Heels.
