HGTV starts off new year with a parade

By Kevin McDonough United Feature Syndicate

The fact that New Year’s Day lands on a Saturday should make it the laziest day of the year. But don’t tell those busy beavers at HGTV. The Home and Garden Network will rouse you out of bed with a parade and have you drilling, nailing and spackling your way to self-improvement before last night’s champagne buzz evaporates.

Something called “The Making of the Rose Parade 2005” actually begins at 7 o’clock in the morning. On New Year’s Day! What kind of person wakes up at the crack of dawn to watch a documentary about making parade floats? For “late” risers, it repeats at 10 a.m.

Since some see New Year’s Day as a day of renewal and resolutions, why not make room for renovations? Hosted by designer Karen McAloon, “Design Remix” (3:30 p.m., Saturday, HGTV) offers fun and affordable ideas for fixing up attics, basements and other neglected spaces. Once the contents of the room are dumped on the front lawn, McAloon and her crew, and members of the participating household, refurbish and renovate the space using some discarded pieces as well as touches from the rest of the house. Why recycle old stuff? Because every makeover on “Remix” costs $50 or less.

On a day dedicated to college football bowl games, CBS makes room for “A Tee Time Like No Other” (1 p.m. Saturday, CBS). Pro golfer David Duval and his father, Bob, a Champions Tour player, team up with two golf champions of the Special Olympics, Kevin Erickson and Oliver Doherty. Jim Nantz narrates.

The calendar may say 2005, but primetime will spend much of the weekend in retro mode. CBS repeats the 2003 special “The Andy Griffin Show Reunion: Return to Mayberry” (8 p.m., Saturday). Surviving cast members Andy Griffith (Sheriff Andy Taylor), Ron Howard (Opie Taylor), Don Knotts (Deputy Barney Fife) and Jim Nabors (Gomer Pyle) gather on a replica of the original courthouse set and reminisce about their days on the show, a spin-off of “Make Room for Daddy” that ran from 1960 to 1968.

ABC returns to the era of Ronald Reagan, “greed is good” and ever-present shoulder pads with “Dynasty: The Making of a Guilty Pleasure” (9 p.m., Sunday, ABC), a behind-the-scenes drama about the primetime soap that ran from 1981 to 1989.
