Police identify victim in Spokane shooting death

From staff reports

Spokane Police identified the man killed early Saturday outside a North Side bar, and said they have probable cause to arrest a 17-year-old for the crime.

Calvin Banks, 28, was shot in the heart in what police described as a confrontation between two gangs that escalated to a shootout at Crazy 8’s bar, 21 E. Lincoln Road.

Detectives continue to search for 17-year-old Deric D. Burton, who recently moved to Spokane from Compton, Calif., Peterson said.

Police earlier referred to Burton as a “person of interest” in the case, and then a suspect. In a news release Tuesday afternoon, police said they have probable cause to arrest Burton for the shooting.

Detective say Burton, a transient in Spokane, may be in a white Ford Taurus, mid-1990s model, with tinted windows. The car may have one or more bullet holes in the passenger side.

Investigators are searching for a person who apparently videotaped the gathering early on New Year’s Day, just as the shooting took place, Sgt. Joe Peterson said.

Investigators believe one group of gang members waited for the other near Banks’ car about 2 a.m. Saturday and shot him once in the chest, Peterson said.

Anyone with information about the video or the case is asked to call Secret Witness at 327-5111.
