Tech gives Miami rude ACC welcome

Will Bynum scored 21 points and No. 9 Georgia Tech ruined Miami’s Atlantic Coast Conference debut with an 80-69 victory Thursday night at Atlanta.

The Yellow Jackets (10-2, 1-0) built a 14-point halftime lead and held off Miami’s (9-3, 0-1) surge in the first 5 minutes of the second half.

Georgia Tech bounced back from an overtime loss at No. 2 Kansas, also getting 15 points from Luke Schenscher. Jarrett Jack, who had a huge game against the Jayhawks, chipped in 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

(15) Texas 74, Memphis 67: At Austin, Texas, P.J. Tucker scored four points in the final 42 seconds, including a fastbreak dunk after a turnover, and the Longhorns (11-2) muscled past the Tigers (7-7) for a rugged victory.

(23) Cincinnati 83, DePaul 54: At Cincinnati, Jason Maxiell scored 19 points, and the Bearcats (12-1, 1-0 C-USA) rattled the Blue Demons (8-4, 0-1) with their intense man-to-man defense.

(25) Virginia Tech 80, Fordham 67: At Blacksburg, Va., Erin Gibson scored 14 points, and Kerri Gardin had eight of her 13 down the stretch to help the Hokies (11-2) win their ninth straight game, over the Rams (4-10). … (11) Minnesota 74, Wisconsin 49: At Madison, Wis., Janel McCarville became the 10th player in Big Ten history to surpass 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career, and the Gophers (12-2, 3-0 Big Ten) beat the Badgers (6-6, 1-2). … Penn State 77, (18) Iowa 71: At Iowa City, Iowa, Jess Strom scored nine of her 29 points in the final 2:18 and helped the Lady Lions (7-6, 2-0 Big Ten) end the Hawkeyes’ (13-1, 2-1) brief stint as the nation’s only unbeaten team. … North Carolina State 65, (16) Vanderbilt 64: At Nashville, Tenn., Rachel Stockdale scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half to help the Wolfpack (12-2) beat the Commodores (11-2).
