Free throws pay off for Lakeland in IEL boys victory

Lakeland scored 26 points from the free-throw line to score a 76-60 Inland Empire League boys basketball victory over Moscow at Rathdrum Saturday.

The Hawks (7-8, 3-5) were collectively 26 for 33 from the line and Ryan Gallia was 13 of 15 while leading all scorers with 21 points. Phillip Viebrock added another 18.

Moscow (11-4, 4-4) got 20 points from Jake Lefors, but was just 16 of 25 from the line.

Intermountain League

Timberlake comes back

Timberlake roared back from a nine-point deficit with 3 minutes left to play to earn the Tigers their first league victory of the season, 47-43 over visiting St. Maries. Matt Douglas’ 3-pointer with 3 minutes left sparked the final run for the Tigers (5-8, 1-3). Douglass finished with 19 points. Ryne Eberlin had 11 points to lead the Lumberjacks (4-8, 0-4). … Bonners Ferry 54, Kellogg 49: The Badgers took control in the second half and held on for the win at Kellogg to claim sole possession of first place. Bonners Ferry (6-10, 4-0) was 14 of 17 from the free-throw line. Bryan Cossairt led the Badgers with 22 points and Spenser Behrens added another 17. Kellogg (8-7, 3-1) got 14 points from Jacob Conboy.

Non-league

LW turns away Genesee

LaCrosse-Washtucna was perfect from the field in the fourth quarter to turn away visiting Genesee, 48-44 in a non-league game. The Tigercats (9-4) were 6 for 6 from the floor in the final 8 minutes, where Matt Martin scored eight of his game-high 18 points.

North Star League

Lakeside cruises at Mullan

League-leading Lakeside trailed by eight points after one quarter and came back to lead by one at halftime and never looked back, scoring a 54-33 North Star League victory at Mullan. The Knights took a 38-15 advantage on the boards. Tim Wolfe led all scorers with 19 points for Lakeside (14-1, 7-0). Jesse James posted 10 points to lead the Tigers (4-7, 2-2).

Sandpoint holds on at Post Falls

Sandpoint saw its 12-point second-half lead evaporate at Post Falls, where the Bulldogs held on for a 49-46 Inland Empire League victory. Sandpoint (11-5, 6-4) trailed at a point at intermission, then went on an 18-7 tear in the third period. Elle Carne had 19 points to lead the Bulldogs. Sean Topp scored 12 points, grabbed seven rebounds and made a pair of steals to lead the Trojans (2-6, 0-11). The Trojans missed a 3-pointer with 4 seconds left in the game that would have forced overtime. … Coeur d’Alene 70, Lewiston 37: The Vikings dominated visiting Lewiston, roaring to a 38-16 halftime lead and cruising in the second half. Jenna Griffitts was 7 of 14 from the field to lead Coeur d’Alene (15-3, 9-1) with 20 points and Ali Johnson drilled 4 of 9 shots from beyond the 3-point arc to add 18. Wesli Kalbfleisch led the Bengals (8-10, 4-6). … Lakeland 54, Moscow 52: The Hawks held off a furious fourth-quarter rally to earn the win at Rathdrum. Lakeland (12-5, 6-4) led 40-23 after three quarters, then saw the Bears go on a 29-14 roll in the fourth quarter – cutting the lead to 53-52 with 1second left. Ashley Beck and Mindy Meyer both scored 10 points to lead Lakeland. Jacki Calhoun paced Moscow (8-11, 4-7) with 25 points.

Intermountain League

St. Maries press yields win

Three players scored in double figures to lead St. Maries to a 59-43 a league victory at Timberlake. The Lumberjacks pressed in the second quarter and the result was a 21-8 run to reach intermission up 31-17. But Timberlake clawed back, cutting the St. Maries lead to just eight points in the third quarter. The Lumberjacks pulled away for good by hitting 3-pointers. … Bonners Ferry 48, Kellogg 42: Katie Poston pulled down 17 rebounds, collected seven steals and scored eight points to lead the Badgers (7-6, 3-1) at Kellogg. Becky Lowther led Bonners Ferry with 14 points. Whitney Mann scored 11 points to lead Kellogg (8-8, 1-3).

North Star League

Knights start fast, mash Mullan

Lakeside fired out of the blocks and never looked back to score a 41-26 league victory at Mullan. Corrina Hendrickx had 14 points to lead all scorers for the Knights, with Wynonna Johnson adding another 11. Katlyn Valerio had 11 points to lead the Tigers.

Top-ranked Scotties romp

The Freeman Scotties, the top-ranked Class 1A team in Washington, used a full-court defense to flatten visiting Priest River, 73-42, at Freeman. Junior standout Jessie DePell pumped in 18 points to lead Freeman (12-2). Jessica Willig had a dozen points to lead the Spartans (8-8). … LaCrosse-Washtucna 56, Genesee 35: The Tigercats (9-4, 4-3) dominated on the boards to earn the non-league win on their home court. Mo Webley scored 18 points and Jennifer Ayers Stamper added another 14 to lead LaCrosse-Washtucna.

Wrestling

Sandpoint wins Clearwater Classic

Sandpoint edged Clarkston to capture the Clearwater Classic at Lewiston. The Bulldogs scored 192 team points and crowned a pair of individual champions and had eight wrestlers place. Clarkston had eight wrestlers place, with a pair of individual champions. Joe Fio won at 119 pounds and Chad Spade at 125 for Sandpoint. Clarkston’s Matt Babino was the 103 champion and teammate Randy Earl did the same at 152. Post Falls finished fourth, Lewiston fifth and Moscow 14th in the 15-team tournament.
