Ducks will play Houston after Indiana cancels
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana will not play Oregon as scheduled this coming football season, the Hoosiers’ first under new coach Terry Hoeppner.
Indiana’s 30-24 road upset of then-No. 24 Oregon last September was a highlight of since-fired coach Gerry DiNardo’s three seasons at IU. The second game in the two-game series was set to be played Sept. 10 at IU’s Memorial Stadium, but Indiana exercised a contract option allowing it to change the schedule without financial penalty.
Indiana doesn’t have a new opponent to replace Oregon.
“This allows us to pursue some options with our schedule, and we look to have things wrapped up within the next few weeks,” IU athletic director Rick Greenspan said Monday.
Oregon will replace the Indiana game with a season-opening game at Houston on Sept. 1 in Reliant Stadium – home of the NFL’s Houston Texans – in a game that will be televised nationally by ESPN, beginning at 6 p.m. (PDT).
As part of the home-and-home agreement, Houston is scheduled to return the game at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Ore., on Sept. 1, 2007.
The only previous meeting between Oregon and Houston occurred in Eugene in 1983, with the Ducks prevailing 15-14.
