East Valley, U-Hi set up huge match

The match the Greater Spokane League wrestling community has been pointing toward since November will be Saturday at East Valley: University vs. EV.

The league’s two top teams and cross-valley rivals earned their much-anticipated showdown for the league championship by winning their regular-season finales Thursday – both in convincing fashion. EV dominated visiting Clarkston 48-16 and U-Hi spanked Central Valley 48-9.

Undefeated 160-pound senior Fred Arnold of EV scored a technical fall over Lyle Draper in the opening match. The Bantams came right back when their 171-pounder, Dusty Rebel, upset previously unbeaten Jordan Jolley on a 14-12 decision.

From there, the Knights took control.

Daniel Michalski scored a 7-0 decision over Wes Braun at 189. Tyler Jolley, Chris Helm and Shelby Lawson scored consecutive pins at 215, 275 and 103. Joey Plumb capped an undefeated GSL season by scoring a major decision over Kody Desjardin at 112 to complete a five-match win streak.

Jared Imes completed an undefeated GSL regular season with a pin at 130 with nine seconds left in the match. In a battle of unbeaten 135-pounders, Clarkston’s Jason Fairley scored a 9-6 decision over Matt Hansen.

U-Hi 48, CV 9: The Titans dominated their district rival, scoring three major decisions, three technical falls and a pin. U-Hi 103 pounder Brian Owen, son of Central Valley coach John Owen, scored a major decision in the night’s second match. U-Hi’s Chase Fish scored the only pin of the night at 112. CV’s Lucas Chesher needed overtime to decision Matt Machala at 130, and teammate Camren Ebat scored a 9-5 victory at 152 over Tim Owen. CV freshman 215-pounder Tyler Cochran handed Nick Rose his first GSL loss of the season, 7-1. The Titans stayed undefeated at 171 when August Pope scored a 13-2 major decision over Nicholas Severns. … Mead 42, Lewis and Clark 30: Visiting LC led 30-25 with three matches left. Neil Didier pinned Kyle Hannula at 152 to give the Panthers a lead that Jordan Greco padded with a technical fall over Roman Maier at 160. Mead’s Ian Matson avenged a tournament loss to Alex Nelson by scoring an 11-9 decision. … Mt. Spokane 33, NC 28: Noah Hatton’s 12-8 decision over Richard Mobley at 140 sparked the Wildcats to the home win. NC’s Derek Brown (189) pinned Matt Schaffer in 39 seconds. … Cheney 51, Rogers 25: All seniors won for the host Blackhawks. Stefan Swenson scored a first-round pin of Rogers’ Mike Langford at 160 to get his first varsity win. Cheney’s Justin Garland capped a comeback from a 12-3 deficit at 275 by pinning Eric Hernandez in the second round. … Ferris 41, Gonzaga Prep 33: Sophomores Taylor Yonago (125) and Jake Webb (130) scored back-to-back pins to secure the victory for the host Saxons. Down 4-`2 going into the final period, Jordan Reese (103) turned G-Prep’s Marc Whipple, earning a pin at 5:18. … Shadle Park 33, West Valley 31: Paul Burdulis’ 12-8 decision over freshman Andy Vennum at 160 earned the Highlanders the victory in their final home match of the season. WV got consecutive decisions from Jesse Swenson (140) and Chris Anderson (145) and a major decision from Jeff Degenhardt at 152 to take the lead going into the final match.

Reardan upsets ACH

Reardan went 7 of 8 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to score a 43-40 Bi-County League win over Almira/Coulee-Hartline at Hartline. Ian Wagner was 5 of 6 from the line and led the Indians (4-10, 3-9) with 17 points. Kyle Higginbotham led the Warriors (7-7, 6-6) with 11 points.

Kami Clark scored seven of her 22 points in the third quarter as ACH tamed Reardan 74-58 in Bi-County League play at Hartline. Michelle Balcom had 11 points and five assists for the Warriors (12-2, 11-1). Kylie Casselberry paced the Indians (2-12. 1-11) with 22 points.
