Gunselman, Gonzaga Prep wrestle past Shadle Park

Gonzaga Prep senior Joe Gunselman’s comeback win in the final match of the night sealed a 38-28 victory over Shadle Park in a Greater Spokane League crossover wrestling match at Gonzaga Prep Thursday.

Gunselman trailed 7-2 to Adam Clark after one period and 10-2 after two, but his takedown with 25 seconds left in the match earned him a 14-12 victory in his final dual meet match of his career.

Gonzaga Prep’s Chris Katus finished an undefeated dual meet season, moving up a weight class to take a 13-6 decision over Joel Howard at 135.

North Central 42, Mead 30: North Central won the first nine matches of the night on its own mat, from 125 through 189 pounds, including consecutive pins by Thomas Montague (130), Curtis Kinne (135), Dan Siebert (140) and Richard Mobley (145). Mike Clute pulled out a 9-7 victory over Mead’s Neil Didier in the final seconds of their match at 152, and North Central 189-pounder Derek Brown remained undefeated with a 5-1 victory over Scott McKenney. … Mt. Spokane 32, Lewis and Clark 28: Mt. Spokane had an advantage in the crossover match: LC was forced to forfeit four weights at 171, 189, 215 and 275. Still, the host Tigers almost pulled out a win. Kyle Hannula was on the verge of earning a technical fall over Matt Sisson at 152, only to have Sisson battle back. Hannula pulled out a 22-20 victory in the final seconds for the Tigers. LC 130-pounder Nate Powell remained undefeated in the GSL, winning by pin. … Cheney 44, West Valley 32: The Blackhawks put the match away with a technical fall and three pins in the final five weights at West Valley. Nolan Pegg, Travis McKenzie and Justin Garland scored pins at 189, 215 and 275, respectively. Cheney’s Blake Risk completed his career undefeated in dual meet matches, capping his streak with a pin at 130. West Valley’s Dan Shane wrestled his first varsity match of the season at 152 and earned a major decision. … Ferris 51, Rogers 26: Undefeated defending state champion Kyle Yonago scored a second-round pin at 152 pounds to highlight the Saxons’ crossover victory at Rogers. Dylan Morgan got things started for Ferris at 103 pounds. Jacob Schmidt had the Saxon on his back and was close to scoring a pinfall only to have Morgan escape and score the pin with 11 seconds remaining in the second period.

Great Northern League

Deer Park built a lead early and survived a late rally to take a 39-31 league victory at Deer Park. Victor Nesenchuk made his varsity debut at 125 pounds and scored a pin. Chewelah’s Joe Tetro needed just 12 seconds to pin Todd Miller in the 275-pound match.

Lakeside 37, Colville 30: Matt Lindquist learned a lot since Saturday. The Colville 145-pound wrestler lost a 13-8 decision to Matt Dinsmore at the Dream Duals Tournament at East Valley. Thursday he put his knowledge to good use, avenging that loss with a 12-10 decision. … Medical Lake 53, Riverside 24: The Cardinals’ Cody Link highlighted his team’s victory by defeating state veteran Danny Moody in the 135-pound match.

Boys basketball

Raiders romp at Liberty Bell

Lake Roosevelt cruised to a 75-55 Caribou Trail League boys basketball victory at Liberty Bell. Nick Barnaby poured in 22 points to lead the Raiders.

Gymnastics

Mead finishes undefeated season

Mead completed an undefeated Greater Spokane League gymnastics season by beating Central Valley, Ferris and North Central at Mead. The Panthers scored 172.975 team points to easily outdistance CV, which scored 164.025. Ferris was third at 163.525 and North Central fourth at 152.975. The Bears’ Maya Morgan captured all-around honors with 35.575, winning the vault with a score of 9.0 as well. The district meet is Friday at Mead. … Shadle Park 168.3, Rogers 161.15: Meghan Johnson won three events to lead the Highlanders to the GSL win at Shadle Park. Rogers’ Kayla Clark captured all-around honors, scoring 35.425 points by winning the vault and placing second in the other events.
