Michaels hits police officer

The Spokesman-Review

NOTES

Philadelphia outfielder Jason Michaels was arrested early Sunday in Philadelphia, after allegedly punching a uniformed police officer outside a city nightclub.

Michaels, 29, spent nine hours in custody before he was released on his own recognizance at about noon, Philadelphia police Cpl. Jim Pauley said.

“He punched a Philadelphia police officer and wrestled him to the ground, in the process ripping the police officer’s shirt,” Pauley said. “It took four officers to control him.”

Police were dispersing a crowd in the Old City entertainment district just before 3 a.m. and everyone moved on willingly except Michaels, Pauley said.

Michaels was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, simple assault and reckless endangerment. He is due to appear in court on Thursday.

No DL for Roberts

Dave Roberts went from being a candidate for the disabled list to starting in center field and batting leadoff for the San Diego Padres.

Roberts missed seven games after straining a tendon in his left knee against the Seattle Mariners on June 24. The Padres thought they would need to put Roberts on the DL to make room for reliever Paul Quantrill, but he made enough progress that Paul McAnulty, an infielder-outfielder, was optioned back to Double-A Mobile.

Clearing the bases

The Indians placed right-handed reliever Rafael Betancourt on the 15-day DL with right shoulder inflammation. … The Orioles placed Geronimo Gil on the 15-day DL to give the catcher ample time to recover from a bothersome thumb injury that occurred a month ago.
