Mount St. Michael Courtyard Concert Saturday
The Singing Nuns of Mount St. Michael will present their annual Courtyard Concert on Saturday at the convent north of Spokane.
Gates open at 4:30 p.m. for pre-concert activities, including an art exhibit by 11-year-old Akiane Kramarik of Post Falls, who has been featured on “Oprah” and CNN; performers including a harpist, country band and Irish dancers; tours of the historic facility; and food booths.
The concert begins at 7 p.m. and will conclude with the “Hallelujah Chorus,” with audience participation invited. A car will be auctioned at intermission.
Since forming in 1979, the Singing Nuns have toured across the country and appeared on national television.
Admission to Saturday’s concert is $5 per person, $15 per car, $30 per bus. Bring your own blankets and chairs.

Spokane Symphony fund-raiser
The Spokane Symphony Associates will stage their second annual Summer Soiree today from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at Beacon Hill Events and Caterers, 4848 E. Wellesley Ave.
The event includes 35 wines from around the world for tasting and purchase, a silent auction, food, and Caribbean-inspired music by Moko Jumbie.

Cathedral concert series
The Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist continues its Second Sunday concert series on Sunday with organist Martin Welzel and pianist Alexandra Kertz-Welzel performing works by Flor Peeters, Marcel Dupre, Sigfrid Karg-Elert and Camille Saint-Saens.
Welzel, who has performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe and made numerous recordings, is completing doctoral studies in organ performance at the University of Washington. Kertz-Welzel is a visiting scholar there working on a comparison of music education in the U.S. and Germany.
The concert begins at 4 p.m. at the cathedral, 127 E. 12th Ave., preceded by tours beginning at noon. Admission is free; donations will be accepted. For more information call 838-4277.
Sitarists in Sandpoint
The Mishras, a father-son sitar duo from India, will perform classical ragas and folk music in a concert Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Gardenia Center, Fourth and Church in Sandpoint.
Pandit Shivnath Mishra, head of the music department at Sanskrit University in Benares, India, has recorded and toured extensively. His son, Deobrat Mishra, received a Jewels of Sound award, India’s equivalent of a Grammy, and recently earned his master’s degree in sitar.
This spring, the family opened its Academy of Classical Indian Music in hopes of preserving the traditional music of its homeland.
