Associated Press

NOTES

With their struggling closer on the disabled list and their ace at partial strength, the Boston Red Sox are sending Curt Schilling to the bullpen to plug a gap there and help him work his way back from an ankle injury.

Schilling has been on a minor league rehab assignment while trying to recover. After a brief workout Wednesday before the Red Sox played in Texas, Schilling left to rejoin Triple-A Pawtucket to throw one relief inning tonight.

“Boston closer Keith Foulke was put on the 15-day DL and will have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. To fill Foulke’s roster spot, Boston purchased the contract of right-hander Scott Cassidy from Pawtucket.

Fans pick final All-Stars

Chicago White Sox outfielder Scott Podsednik and Houston Astros pitcher Roy Oswalt earned the final spots on the All-Star teams in Internet fan voting.

In a surprise finish, the unheralded Podsednik edged popular New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter for the 32nd roster spot on the American League squad.

He also beat out Torii Hunter of Minnesota, Hideki Matsui of New York and Carl Crawford of Tampa Bay.

Oswalt topped four other N.L. pitchers: San Diego’s Trevor Hoffman, Arizona’s Brandon Webb, and Philadelphia’s Billy Wagner and Brett Myers.
