Kostina qualifies as No. 2 seed at PNGA

Washington State University golfer Anastasia Kostina fired a 2-over-par 74 Tuesday to capture the No. 2 seed headed into match play at the PNGA Women’s Amateur Championship at Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club in Federal Way, Wash.

Kostina’s two-round total of 6-over 150 was one stroke behind top-seeded Paige Mackenzie of Yakima and the University of Washington.

The top 32 golfers qualified for the single-elimination match play, which begins today.

Among those advancing were Maria Kostina (167), Hayden Lake, Idaho; Mandy Parsons (170), Spokane; Sarah Bassett (170), Spokane; and Katie Kofmehl (171), Cheney.

Men’s PNGA

Ryan Carter, a Fresno State University competitor from Hacienda Heights, Calif., won medalist honors at the PNGA Men’s Amateur Championship with a two-day total of 10-under 132 at Oakbrook Golf & Country Club at Lakewood, Wash.

Carter advances at top seed to the 64-man, single-elimination match play portion of the event, which begins today. Andres Gonzales of Olympia had the tournament’s best round, a 63, to finish one shot behind Carter. Washington State golfer Jordan Madison, who was tied for the first-round lead, finished as the third seed with a 134 total.

Among those advancing were Craig Leslie (142), Spokane; Kent Brown (147), Colville; and David Fern (148), Spokane.
