Exchange Club cites pair for volunteer work

Sister Mary Bridget Ward and Marie Pizelo recently received the Golden Deeds Award from the North Spokane Exchange Club for their volunteer work.

Pizelo has been volunteering at The Women’s Hearth, part of the Transitions organization, for 12 years. Ward has volunteered at Miryam’s House for 10 years.

•Two area high school students were recently recognized for completing the Scripps Howard Multicultural High School Journalism Workshop at the University of Idaho. They wrote news stories for radio and newspapers and polished their reporting, writing and editing skills.

Among the 16 participants were Sean Williams of Pullman and Michelle Mascardo of Spokane.

•Renn J. Turner of Spokane recently received a Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, N.J. He also earned the Kenyon J. Wildrick Award for Excellence in Homilies. Turner plans to complete a one-year internship at East Woods Presbyterian Church in Vancouver, Wash.

•Julie Witherspoon and Roberto Gallotti, both of Spokane, were named to the dean’s list of Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., for the spring semester. Both are graduates of St. George’s School.

Witherspoon is the daughter of Gay and Peter Witherspoon of Spokane, and Gallotti is the son of Maria and Massimo Gallotti of Spokane.

•Jeff Liepman of Veradale recently graduated from Willamette University, Salem, Ore., with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry. He is the son of Jan and Mike Liepman and plans to attend the Keck Graduate Institute at Claremont University in California this fall.

•Joseph Baird recently graduated from Kings College at the University of London with a Master of Research-Geography degree. Baird, a 1996 graduate of North Central High School, is the son of Joseph and Shelley Baird.

•Shellie Kafton recently graduated from Goldsmiths College at the University of London with a Master of Creative Curating degree. Kafton, the daughter of Ray and Noel Kafton, is a 1993 graduate of North Central High School.

The following students have been named to Gonzaga University’s president’s list for the spring semester. Students must earn a 3.7 or better grade-point average. Students are listed by their hometowns.
