Rogers appeals his suspension
NOTES
Texas Rangers pitcher Kenny Rogers had his hearing before commissioner Bud Selig in Milwaukee Friday, appealing his 20-game suspension for shoving two TV cameramen last month.
Rogers, wearing sunglasses, black slacks and a gray sport coat, wouldn’t comment on what was discussed during the session when he emerged.
Asked how it went, Rogers responded: “We’ll see. We’ll be waiting for a decision.”
Major League Baseball spokesman Pat Courtney said there was no timeline on when Selig would announce a decision on the appeal. The three-hour hearing included comments back and forth, as both sides stated their positions, he said.
“It’s all in the commissioner’s hands,” Courtney said.
How far to RFK’s wall?
Armed with a 300-foot yellow tape measure, Washington Nationals outfielder Jose Guillen decided to see for himself just how far a ball must be hit to clear the wall at RFK Stadium.
Guillen was on the field with other Nationals players and members of the coaching staff, checking the measurements from home plate to the fences.
The Washington Post reported that the Nationals had brought in a surveyor to check the distances and found that it was 394.74 feet to the mark on the wall in left-center that read “380,” and 395 feet to the mark in right-center that read “380.” The team moved the green pads with the “380” markings closer to the respective foul lines to be more accurate.
Pavano throws simulation
New York Yankees starter Carl Pavano threw 45 pitches during a three-inning simulated game in his second session against hitters since being sidelined with right shoulder tendinitis.
Pavano also threw two 20-pitch simulated innings Monday. He is 4-6 with a 4.77 ERA this season.
Pavano hasn’t pitched since June 27 at Baltimore. The Yankees are hopeful Pavano will rejoin the rotation next week, possibly July 30 against the Los Angeles Angels.
