Rangers’ Nix out for the season

Associated Press

NOTES

Texas Rangers center fielder Laynce Nix said Saturday he will have season-ending surgery on his right shoulder next week.

The Rangers also added right-hander James Baldwin to the roster and recalled first baseman Adrian Gonzalez from Triple-A Oklahoma. Left-hander Erasmo Ramirez and infielder Marshall McDougall were optioned to Oklahoma.

After consulting earlier in the week with team physician Dr. Keith Meister and Dr. Lewis Yocum in California, Nix opted to have a muscle tear in the shoulder repaired now so he will be ready for spring training.

“I have to get it fixed so I’ll be ready for next season,” Nix said. “It’s been bothering me since last season when I ran into a wall. I feel I have to get something done about it.

KC, Jays recall starters

Both the Kansas City Royals and the Toronto Blue Jays promoted pitchers from Triple-A to start their game.

The Royals brought up right-hander Kyle Snyder after a rehab assignment in Omaha. Snyder went 0-0 with a 4.15 ERA in six relief appearances earlier this season before going on the DL in May with a strained right shoulder.

The Blue Jays recalled right-hander David Bush after a two-month stint at Syracuse. Bush started the season in the Toronto rotation, going 0-5 with a 4.80 ERA in 10 starts.

Rookie hurt in dugout

Cardinals rookie John Rodriguez sprained his right ankle when he tripped over an exposed nail on the dugout steps during a game against the Chicago Cubs.

Rodriguez, who has hit safely in all six starts since being called up from the minors, tumbled into the dugout after his spikes got caught. He is the second St. Louis player to be injured that way – Larry Walker tripped earlier this season.

“What can you do?” Rodriguez said. “Hopefully, they’ll do something about it and get it fixed.”

Rodriguez, who had two hits Saturday, expected to be in today’s lineup against the Cubs.
