Medical Lake’s Nelson faces old adversary in boys 2A tennis final

Medical Lake’s Zak Nelson will get his chance to avenge last year’s loss in the 2A boys finals when he meets Travis Johnson of Foster in today’s 11 a.m. final at the Yakima Tennis Club.

Nelson lost in the 2004 championship match to Johnson 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. This year, both players breezed into the finals. Nelson beat Matt Stewart of Omak in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-0, and whipped Ridgefield’s Matt Erickson in the semis 6-2, 6-1.

In boys doubles, the Medical Lake duo of Max Nelson and Tanner Tareski made it to the semifinals before losing 6-3, 6-2 to Steven Connolly and Jeremiah Root of Omak.

In the 1A/B tournament at Yakima, St. George’s Caitie Storm lost to Liz Lewis of Bush in the semis, 6-0, 6-0.

2A softball

Colville got off to a rocky start in the State 2A softball tournament at Walla Walla Point Park in Wenatchee, but stormed back in consolation play.

The Indians fell 9-6 to Elma in the opener, but beat Kiona-Benton 20-5 and Omak 13-4. They play La Center in today’s consolations at 10 a.m.

Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls lost its opener 5-3 to Montesano and was eliminated in the consolation bracket by Meridian, 5-3.

1A softball

At the Paul Lauzier Athletic Complex in Moses Lake, Colfax won its opener 5-1 over Friday Harbor, but fell to Onalaska 5-4 in the quarterfinals and now faces league foe Freeman in the consolation bracket. The Scotties lost their first game, 4-2 to Royal, but rebounded in the consolation bracket with a 10-8 win over Toledo.

B softball

At the Gateway Sports Complex in Yakima, it was a rough day for area teams. Colton and Inchelium were the only area teams to win first-round games. Colton beat Selkirk 7-1 and then lost to Mossyrock 4-1 in the quarterfinals. Inchelium opened with a 10-1 win over Evergreen Christian, but then lost to Toutle Lake 13-0.

In other first-round action, Morton shut out Liberty 2-0, Touchet outlasted Odessa 15-10, and Entiat edged Curlew 5-4. Liberty stayed alive in the consolation bracket, beating DeSales 5-4. Selkirk also advanced with a 12-5 win over Quilcene. Curlew eliminated Odessa with a 4-2 win.
