Woman gives birth after ovary transplant

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – An Alabama woman gave birth this week to a baby girl after undergoing the first known successful ovary transplant in the United States.

Stephanie Yarber, 25, gave birth Monday to a 7 pound, 15 ounce girl, said Yarber’s identical twin sister, who donated the ovarian tissue that made Yarber fertile.

An infertility specialist performed the transplant in April 2004, and Yarber became pregnant five months later. She was unable to become pregnant without medical help.
