Lifestyle funds automatically allocate your investments based on when you plan to retire. As you get closer to retirement, your fund’s portfolio becomes more conservative. Last year, nearly 40 percent of workers who were offered lifestyle funds in their plans invested in them. But only 15 percent of those investors used the funds in the way they’re intended: The majority of savers invested in lifestyle funds in combination with other mutual funds.
