Birdie binge lifts Ochoa to title

Lorena Ochoa overcame a five-stroke deficit with seven holes to play to beat Paula Creamer by four strokes in the Rochester LPGA at Pittsford, N.Y.

Ochoa birdied six of the last seven holes for a 7-under 65 and 15-under 273 total on the Locust Hill course. The 23-year-old Mexican star, a runner-up three times this year, earned $225,000 for her first victory of the season and third in two years.

Creamer, an 18-year-old rookie seeking her second victory in a month, closed with a 71. Rosie Jones (68) finished third at 10 under, and South Korea’s Jeong Jang (66) followed at 8 under.

Women’s Senior Golf Tour

San Diego teaching professional Kitty Robyn won the Hy-Vee Classic, closing with an even-par 72 for a one-stroke victory over Cindy Miller and Laura Shanahan Rowe in the Hy-Vee Classic at Johnston, Iowa.

Robyn finished with a 4-under 140 total on the Hyperion Field Club course, and earned $75,000. Rowe shot a 66, and Miller had a 70. Dawn Coe-Jones (73), Alicia Dibos (73) and Barb Moxness (70) followed at 2 under.

PGA European Tour

Sweden’s Joakim Backstrom parred the first hole of a playoff with England’s Paul Dwyer to win the Aa Saint-Omer Open at Saint-Omer, France.

Backstrom, who earned a PGA European Tour exemption through next season, closed with a 1-under 70 to match Dwyer (68) at 4-under 280. England’s James Heath (72) and Swedes Steven Jeppesen (68) and Michael Jonzon (68) tied for third at 3 under.
