Crews unable to free grounded sailing ship

Associated Press

OXNARD, Calif. – Salvage crews on Wednesday were unable to free a grounded $4 million sailing ship after a tugboat line snapped.

Salvagers were to make another attempt to pull the ship five miles to Ventura Harbor during high tide this morning, a Coast Guard spokesman said.

The two-masted brigantine Irving Johnson hit a sandbar Monday while entering Channel Islands Harbor in stormy seas. Twenty passengers and crew members were rescued after they fell or jumped into the chilly waters. .
