GU senior Mathews receives AP mention

From staff and news service reports

Gonzaga University women’s basketball senior point guard Shannon Mathews became the first Bulldogs player to earn All-America honors from the Associated Press.

Mathews was named an honorable mention selection Wednesday for Gonzaga, which ended its season at 28-4 with a loss at Southwest Missouri State University in the second round of the Women’s NIT. Mathews was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year earlier this month after guiding the Bulldogs to a 14-0 conference mark and the school’s first national ranking in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today Coaches polls.

Mathews finished her career first on the Gonzaga assists list with 600 and seventh on the scoring list with 1,318 points. The Riverside, Calif., product was a two-time, first-team All-WCC selection.
