GU’s Graves nets coach of year honors

Gonzaga University women’s basketball head coach Kelly Graves was named the Russell Athletic/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association NCAA Division I Region 8 Coach of the Year as voted on by the WBCA members of each region.

Graves guided the Bulldogs (28-4) to their first appearance in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today top 25 polls, their first regular-season West Coast Conference title in 17 years and a berth in the Women’s NIT.

Golf

David Fern and Chris Collins both tied for 13th place to lead Washington State University men to a ninth-place finish at the Pinehurst (N.C.) Invitational tournament.

Fern, a graduate of Mead High, and Collins carded 11-over-par 227s for three rounds.
