Take your shot at Pillsbury’s dough

Fresh sheet Lorie Hutson

This is the time of year to whip up a million-dollar dream. Home cooks should be honing their favorite recipes for the 42nd Pillsbury Bake-Off contest. The deadline for entries is May 31.

There are two new categories in the competition: Cooking for Two and Brand New You. Organizers created Cooking for Two for the growing number of small households and empty nesters who want recipes that are designed to feed two people. Entries should be easy-to-fix meals.

The Brand New You category is a nod to today’s interest in healthier eating. Recipes should be slimmed down using reduced-fat products, fish or leaner cuts of meat, or more “better for you” ingredients such as fruits and vegetables. Look inside today’s IN Food section for a sample recipe. Other categories are: Dinner Made Easy, Weekends Made Special, Wake Up to Breakfast, and Simple Snacks.

“Many past finalists tell us they also found inspiration from restaurant menus, while traveling or by trying new items at the grocery store,” said Lola Whalen, the Bake-Off kitchen’s manager in a news release. “Remember that the recipe entries must be original, so one tip is to look for ways to update an old family recipe with convenience ingredients or simpler preparation.”

To get an idea of what has pleased the judges’ taste buds in the past look at last year’s winning recipes online at www.pillsbury.com/bakeoff. The entire Pillsbury Bake-Off recipe collection is also on the Web site.

For the first time this year, America will get a chance to help judge the competition.

There will be online voting to pick America’s Favorite Recipe Award from among 100 finalists. There are also awards for recipes that feature dairy, celebrate Hispanic cuisines, have a unique innovation or include Splenda Blend for Baking.

Each recipe entered in the contest must include two eligible products from the sponsors of the contests. This year’s list of product has been expanded to include more than 65 products. Among the popular brands are Pillsbury, Hershey’s, Progresso, Old El Paso, Green Giant, Yoplait, Cheerios, Chex, Total, Nature Valley, Hamburger Helper, Muir Glen, Smuckers and Cascadian Farm.
