Hockey

The Spokane Chiefs will select fourth overall in the Western Hockey League’s 15th Annual Bantam Draft on Thursday. The draft, which will be held in Calgary, Alberta, is the first opportunity for WHL teams to add 1990-born players to their respective 50-player lists.

The Regina Pats will select first overall, followed by Swift Current and Prince George. The Chiefs are projected by most draft-watchers to be selecting a forward. Among the players being mentioned are: Mitch Wahl of Seal Beach, Calif.; Kyle Beach of Penticton, British Columbia; James Wright of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; and Dale Hunt of Sanford, Manitoba.

Rowing

Three Gonzaga University athletes from the women’s varsity 8 boat were named to the All-Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association first team.

Kari Durgan, Karen O’Hagan and Sarah Allison earned first-team honors after leading the Bulldogs to a victory in the Grand Final last Sunday on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif.

The victory helped the Gonzaga women wrap up their ninth straight West Coast Conference championship.

Gonzaga junior varsity 8 rowers Carolyn Schepper and Liz Sambach were named to the All-WIRA second team, as was GU men’s junior varsity 8 rower Matthew Wernette.

GU head coaches Dan Gehn and Glenn Putyrae were named WIRA coaches of the year.
