DeLand, Patterson power Spartans to win

Casey DeLand and Jeremy Patterson hit three-run homers in the second inning Wednesday to power Priest River to a five-inning, 11-0 win over visiting Timberlake in Intermountain League baseball.

Steven Gleese (3-2) struck out 11 and allowed one hit for the Spartans (18-2, 12-0). The Tigers fell to 6-14, 5-5.

•North Central’s Brett Richardson struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings, leading the Indians (8-7, 8-5) to a 7-4 victory in a Greater Spokane League game at Mead (5-8, 5-8). NC jumped ahead with five runs in the first two innings, capped by Sean Carnahan’s RBI single. Sophomore Boone Plager led the Indians with two hits.

•In the Great Northern League, Lakeside sophomore Anthony Froemke struck out 10 in a three-hitter as the Eagles (10-5, 9-4) posted a 9-0 win over visiting Riverside (2-15, 1-14) at Nine Mile Falls. … At Deer Park, Medical Lake registered a 12-2 win over the host Stags (1-13, 1-11). Anthony Jorgenson homered for the Cardinals (9-6, 7-6).

Boys soccer

Aaron Malmoe, Ian Matson and Brian Underhill each scored during a 5-minute span early in the second half as Mead (9-6, 9-4) eliminated Central Valley (11-4-1, 10-3) from GSL title contention with a 3-1 victory at CV. East Valley (11-2, 10-2), which defeated CV on April 22, will clinch the league title with a win at Clarkston on Friday. Mt. Spokane is the only other team with title hopes.

Softball

Tamara Davis had four hits and Dianne Kasinger had two RBIs as Riverside (8-4, 4-2) held off Deer Park 8-7 in GNL play. Katie Bond of the host Stags (2-13, 0-8) had three hits.

Tennis

GSL championships were postponed until this afternoon because of rain. The Ferris boys will host Mt. Spokane, and the Ferris girls will travel to Hart Field against Lewis and Clark. Both matches will start at 3:45.

•New singles champions will be crowned at the 60th Inland Empire Tennis Tournament, Friday and Saturday in Spokane. On the girls’ side, Richland’s Amanda Taylor won the last four but has graduated and passed the torch on to this year’s No. 1 seed from Richland, Jessica Martin. LC sophomore Elise Otto is the No. 2 seed and Ferris senior Heather Handwerk is No. 4. Medical Lake’s Zak Nelson, a 2A finalist last year, is the top seed on the boys’ side.
