Galleries open doors for First Friday views

Art galleries in downtown Spokane open their doors on the First Friday of each month for an evening of art and music. Walk from gallery to gallery to view all of the new exhibits or linger at just a few. Generally the hours are 5 to 8 p.m. (unless otherwise indicated). Here’s a summary:

• Artist’s Tree Gallery, 828 W. Sprague Ave., reception 5 to 9 p.m. – Intriguing textile paintings by fabric artist Odette A. Grassi.

• The Atrium, 123 S. Wall St. (below Europa Restaurant) – Works by Anne Trail of the Palouse Studio Potters Guild.

• Avenue West Gallery, 1021 W. First Ave., reception 5 to 9 p.m. – Funky clay designs by Kyle Patterson.

• The Fox Gallery, Monroe and Sprague – Paintings by Neicy Frey and mixed media pieces by Conrad Bagley.

• Galleria De Felice, 10 S. Post St. in the Davenport Hotel – Oils by Northwest artists. Featuring a new painting by Melville Holmes titled “Quiet Air, Gentle Sea.”

• Grande Ronde Cellars, 906 W. Second Ave. – Louise Saylor’s impressionistic paintings featuring scenes from Venetian canals to Orvieto wineries. Also an ongoing exhibit of works by Shirley Hackett, Susie Snider, Betty Eaton-Rhea, Tami Kraft and John Stokesberry.

• Hotel Lusso, 1 N. Post St. – “Drye Goods Spring Trunk Show” by Nan Drye. Music by Mike Gray.

• GoodWorks Gallery, 1019 W. First Ave., reception 5 to 9 p.m. – Paintings by Sue Rohrback, “Small Treasures in a Theme of Hollyhocks.”

• Huneke Gallery, Spokane Art School, 920 N. Howard St., reception 5 to 7 p.m. – Paintings by Jery Haworth.

• Kolva Sullivan Gallery, 115 S. Adams St. – Dan McCann, “Boxes, Sculptures and Collages.”

• On Sacred Grounds: Coffee, Tea and Specialty Shoppe, Steam Plant Square, 163 S. Lincoln St., reception 6 to 7:30 p.m. – Paintings by Cheri Lisk; harp music by Colleen Carter.

• Peters and Sons Flowers, Gifts and Gallery, 170 S. Lincoln St. – Marsha Marcuson’s representational floral, cityscape and landscape paintings.

• Rainbow Regional Community Center, 508 W. Second Ave. – Cheney artist Rick Baker is showing “spiritually energized giclee prints that come from the heart.”

• Red Sky Studio and Gallery, 115 S. Adams St. – Potter Monte Colgren’s “Shape and Surface.” Demonstration Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

• Spokane Athletic Club, 1002 W. Riverside Ave. – Paintings by Sue Bradley of Tinman Gallery. Reception in library.

• Stone Crazy, Liberty Building, 203 N. Washington St. – Watercolor and acrylic paintings by Irene Dahl.

• Thomas Hammer, 122 N. Wall St. – Local photography and painting.

Other First Night activities

• “Bear Necessities,” downtown streets – A pack of artistically adorned life-size fiberglass bears. Fund-raiser for Ronald McDonald House.

• ComedySportz, 227 W. Riverside Ave. – Free tickets to Friday’s 8 p.m. performance to the first 15 people to stop by between 5 and 6 p.m.

• Far West Billiards, 1001 W. First Ave. – Paintings by local emerging artists.

• Flour Mill Gallery, 621 W. Mallon St. – “A Stone’s Throw,” turned wood bowls and boxes by Mike Graham and paintings by Shirley Hackett, Marsha Marcuson, Dennis Smith, Emma Randolph and Susie Snider.

• Global Credit Union, Lincoln and Riverside – Egg tempera paintings by Irene Dahl and Lorraine Krank.

• Interplayers Gellhorn Gallery, 174 S. Harold St. – A dozen oil paintings from the Galeria De Felice. Painters include Melville Holmes, Ricardi Clementi, Kathleen Hooks, Tony Jankowski, Robert Krogle, Cate Longacre and Vincent De Felice.

• Kress Gallery, River Park Square, third level, 801 W. Main Ave. – “2005 Heart Gallery,” portraits of Washington residents served by the Department of Social and Health Services.

• Liberty Café, 402 W. Main Ave. – “Old Friends, Old Favorites, New Directions,” paintings by Emma Randolph and Edie Dunlap.

• Liquid Life Espresso, 242 W. Sprague – Paintings by Trudy Poindexter.

• The Met, 901 W. Sprague Ave. – Watercolor paintings by Julie Tozzi of Spokane.

• Mootsy’s N. 9 Pizza, 9 N. Washington St. – Works by local artists.

• Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, 2316 W. First Ave. – First Friday admission by donation between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., featuring “An Impressionist Eye: Painting and Sculpture From the Philip and Janice Levin Foundation” and “Enchanted Visions: The Taos Society of Artists and Ancient Cultures.”

• Pottery Place Plus, Flour Mill, 621 W. Mallon Ave. – “Home Grown and Hand Spun,” Judy Graham’s collection of wearable woolens made from Shetland sheep and Angora goats.

• Rock Coffee, 920 W. First Ave. – Paintings by local artists; live acoustic music.

• Rocket on Main, 24 W. Main Ave. – Paintings by Ric Gendron of Spokane.

• Spokane Transit Authority Plaza, 701 W. Riverside Ave. – STA and the MAC present “Seeing Spokane,” century-old photographs of familiar downtown corners, in the upper level rotunda of the Plaza.

Janusz, Gabel at Art Works Gallery

Idaho artists Barbara Janusz of Hope and Gabe Gabel of Sagle are in the spotlight during May at the Art Works Gallery in Sandpoint.

Painter Janusz is showing “Our Precious Resource,” a new series of waterfall watercolors. Gabel is bringing a collection of her limited-edition bronze wildlife sculptures.

‘Palouse and Other Pleasures’

Husband and wife artists, painter Mira Reisberg and photographer Guy Geudldi of Pullman, are showing their work in “Palouse and Other Pleasures.”

The show runs Saturday through May 28 in the Bank Left Gallery, 100 S. Bridge St., Palouse, Wash. An opening reception is Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. in the gallery.

Entrée Gallery opens for season

The Entree Gallery, a summertime favorite in Priest Lake, returns for its 28th year. Spokane plein-air painter Tom Wakeley opens the season on Friday. The gallery’s gazebo area features uniquely crafted household furnishings by regional artists.

A reception will be May 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. The gallery, open daily, is on Reeder Bay Road, two miles east of Nordman near Elkins Resort. For information go to www.entreegallery.com.

• Opening Monday in the Boswell Hall Gallery on the North Idaho College campus in Coeur d’Alene is the “NIC Student Graphic Design Exhibit.” There is an artists’ reception from 5 to 7 p.m. View the work through May 19 on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call (208) 769-7764 for more information.
