Spokane Skills students medal at state contest
Spokane Skills Center students placed first, second and third in the Washington State SkillsUSA Competition held in Tacoma in March.
SkillsUSA is a national organization serving more than 264,500 high school and college students and professional members enrolled in training programs in technical, skilled and service occupations, including health occupations. The programs also help establish industry standards for job skill training in the classroom.
Gold medal winners are Christopher Carr, automotive service technology; Denali Tufto, commercial baking; and Mathew Lee, criminal justice.
Silver medal winners are Drew Knapp, collision repair technology; Gino Cushen and Alex Magana, televison/video production.
Bronze medal winners are Branden Moreau, culinary arts, and Brittney Taylor, criminal justice.
The gold medal winners, Carr, Tufto and Lee, will compete at the national level in Kansas in June.
During the annual national-level SkillsUSA Championships, more than 4,100 students compete in 73 occupational and leadership skill areas.
Free bowling for area students
North Bowl will be offering a card for area students entitling them to two free games of bowling each day (including shoes) now through Labor Day at the bowling center at 125 W. Sinto Ave.
All students ages 6 to 18 in public and private schools are welcome.
Manager Boyd Edelin hopes that this exposure to the sport will make people more aware of the competition available at the high school and college level, along with the ability to earn scholarship money.
Edelin believes that bowling offers an opportunity for kids that may not be able to participate in other junior high and high school sports. Varsity status is critical, and he is trying to get bowling recognized as a letter sport across the state.
