North Central wins to take lead in 3A chase

Raeanne Cumbie and Jamilyn Cumbie combined for five runs batted in Thursday as North Central topped host East Valley 7-2 to take over the lead among 3A teams in Greater Spokane League softball.

EV (8-8, 7-8), which won the earlier matchup 7-5, entered the day with a half-game lead over the Indians (7-7, 7-7) in the chase for 3A postseason. NC has five games left, EV has four.

NC’s Kelsie Vallies pitched a four-hitter and had two hits.

Also in the GSL, Chantal Hughes-Gardner hit a two-run homer in the fourth to give Mead (12-3, 11-3) an 8-0 lead during a 9-3 win at Gonzaga Prep (11-5, 10-5). Megan Bertolero added three hits for the Panthers, who tied idle Mt. Spokane for third place, two game behind Shadle Park. … Linse Vlahovich pitched a two-hitter and Riki Schiermeister tripled as second-place University (12-2, 12-2) held on for a 2-1 win at Clarkston (5-11, 4-11). … Ana Rockstrom’s bunt single scored Ashley Mayhle in the seventh, giving Central Valley (11-5, 10-5) a 6-5 win over visiting West Valley (4-11, 4-10). CV’s Whitney McDaniel pitched a four-hitter, allowed no earned runs and finished 3 for 4. … Shannon Carlon and Jamie Taxter homered on back-to-back pitches in the sixth as Rogers (6-9, 6-8) held on for an 11-8 win over visiting Ferris (0-16, 0-15). Carlon and Taxter were a combined 5 for 7 with five runs. … China Frost homered twice and had six RBIs, and Stephanie Trudeau pitched a three-hitter and struck out 13 as Shadle (14-1, 13-1) rolled to a 13-2 win at Cheney (4-12, 4-11).

Boys soccer

Matt Dougherty and Brett Andrea teamed on a pair of second-half goals as Deer Park (4-8, 4-7) defeated visiting Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls 3-1 to take over fourth place in the Great Northern League. The Eagles (4-8, 3-7) scored on an own goal. … Also in the GNL, Bart Church and Levi Corcoran scored twice apiece as Pullman (11-1, 8-1) rolled to a 7-0 win at Colville (3-10, 2-8), tying idle Medical Lake (10-2, 8-1) for first place in the process. ML will host Pullman on Tuesday.

Tennis

The GSL championships were rained out for a second consecutive day. Ferris will travel to Lewis and Clark’s Hart Field on Wednesday to make up the girls’ match. No makeup date has been set for the boys’ match, Mt. Spokane at Ferris.
