CV business club cited at conference

The Central Valley Future Business Leaders of America Chapter was recognized by the Washington State Business Education Association as the Outstanding Local Chapter for Washington state at the FBLA State Business Conference. The chapter also received the Gold Seal Chapter Award of Merit and was recognized for having the largest local chapter membership in the Northeast Region and the largest number of professional members in the Northeast Region.

The following individual students were recognized at the conference:

James Lyons, a senior at Central Valley High School and the FBLA chapter president, placed second in Networking Concepts, fourth in Technology Concepts, fourth in Visual Basic Programming and fifth in Who’s Who in FBLA. He also placed second with Josh Tempel in the local chapter annual business report.

Andrea Avenger and Anthony Xin place second in Emerging Business Issues.

Jody Hart of Spokane was one of 51 teachers honored at the Tylenol and Terri Lynne Lokoff Child Care Foundation National Child Care Teacher Awards for her project, Enhancing Math and Literacy Centers in My Classroom. Hart is a child-care teacher at the Herzog Family Center.

Travis Howell recently received the Gonzaga University School of Education Excellence Award for an Elementary Education major at the Academic Honors Convocation. Howell, son of Diane and Steve Howell, Clarkston, is currently teaching at Trinity Catholic School in Spokane.

William Scheele received a Washington State University President’s Leadership Award. Scheele will graduate from the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps WSU program today and will be commissioned into the Air Force as a second lieutenant.

“Army Private Melissa Smith has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Smith is the daughter of Dave and Karen Sullivan of Moses Lake and a 1999 graduate of Moses Lake High School.

“Air Force Major Brian Martin has been decorated with the Meritorious Service Medal. Martin is a flight commander/C-40B pilot with 13 years of military service. He graduated in 1987 from Wilbur High School and in 1992 received a bachelor’s degree from Washington State University. He is the son of Larry Martin of Wilbur and Vicki Reynolds of Thousand Palms, Calif.

“Robyn Brown, a 2001 graduate of North Central High School, received membership in the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. Members must graduate with a grade-point average of 3.6 or higher. Brown is a senior at Washington State University studying musical performance. She was nominated for outstanding graduating senior in the College of Liberal Arts and is the 2005 Presser Scholar in the School of Music. She received a full scholarship to the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, to study for a master’s degree.

“Rebecca Mitchell, a senior at Deer Park High School, has received a Washington State University scholarship for the 2005-06 academic year. She received a $7,509 Horizon Credit Union Scholarship. She is the daughter of Vickie and Wilbur Mitchell of Deer Park.

Kirsten Cooper, a native of Spokane, will graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in marketing and associate of arts degree in equestrian studies from the University of Findlay in Ohio. Cooper, a 2001 graduate of The Orme School, is the daughter of Debbie Cooper of Spokane.

Kyle Zeller of Spokane was among the law students at the University of Idaho College of Law to be honored at UI’s April Honors Convocation for staffing the student board of editors of the Idaho Law Review. Membership on the board is an honor.
