LC repeats GSL girls tennis title

Lewis and Clark clinched its second straight Greater Spokane League girls tennis championship by defeating visiting Ferris 4-3 at Hart Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Tigers’ No. 1 singles player, Elise Otto, downed Heather Handwerk 6-3, 6-0. LC’s No. 1 doubles team of Natalie Cholaj and Leslie Griffith topped the Saxons’ Kelsey McLauchin and Kelly Mays 6-4, 6-3.

No. 2 singles player Anna Gullickson and the No. 3 doubles team of Allison Lindsay and Lyndi Seidensticker completed the victory for LC.

Baseball

Stuart Harris’ RBI double in the top of the seventh inning gave Central Valley a 4-3 GSL victory at Ferris. Jake Swantko went six innings, striking out four, to earn the win for the Bears (11-9, 9-9), who clinched a spot in the District 8 4A playoffs. Ryan Murphy and Alex King each had a pair of doubles for the Saxons (13-5, 12-4). … Mt. Spokane’s Paul Smith and Cameron Joslyn combined to hurl a one-hitter at Clarkston (3-14, 3-13), leading the Wildcats (13-4, 12-4) to a 3-1 victory. …Ian Shook collected three hits, two of them doubles, and drove in five runs to lead Shadle Park (13-4, 12-4) to a 9-8 victory at Gonzaga Prep (8-9, 8-8). Shadle maintained a share of first place with Mt. Spokane. Shook’s two-run, two-out double in the top of the seventh plated the winning runs. Bill Rigsby scored three runs and belted a three-run home run in the fifth. … Calvin Jurich scattered five hits and struck out four as University (10-7, 10-6) scored its eighth consecutive victory, 6-3 over host Lewis and Clark (5-13, 5-11) at Hart Field. J.D. Peterson had two hits, including a two-run triple in the fifth, for U-Hi. … Mitch Ramsay belted a three-run homer in the fifth, helping Mead to a 19-1 victory at Cheney (2-17, 2-16). Andy Mattingly added two hits and three RBI, belting a home run with a man aboard in the fourth for the Panthers (6-10, 6-10), who also got a solo homer from Kevin Schneider in the fourth.

“In the Great Northern League, Michael McCanna pitched a complete-game four-hitter as Chewelah (14-4, 13-3) scored a 3-1 victory at Medical Lake (10-8, 8-8). A.J. Proszek provided the offense for the Cougars, collecting two hits and driving in two runs while ripping a solo homer in the fourth. … Kale Stephenson and J.T. Levenseller combined to throw a one-hit shutout against Deer Park (1-17, 1-15), sparking Pullman (16-2, 14-2) to a 13-0 victory in the opening game of a doubleheader at Pullman. Ryan Druffel and Marty Guettinger combined on a three-hit shutout in the Greyhounds’ 11-0 victory in the second game.

Boys soccer

Kyle Yonago scored twice and added an assist to help Ferris (12-4) to a 4-1 victory over University (8-7) in a loser-out match in the District 8 4A playoffs at Spokane Falls Community College. Tom Giardino scored 6 minutes into the match and the Saxons took a 2-0 lead at intermission. The Titans’ Keith Realing cut that lead in half midway through the second half. Ferris plays Mead at 5 p.m. Friday in a loser-our match at SFCC. … Mead’s Panthers (10-6) remained alive behind goals by Ian Matson and Brian Underhill, taking a 2-1 victory over Shadle Park at SFCC. Andy Largent scored with 4 minutes left for the Highlanders (10-5).

Prep softball

Sam Skillingstad twirled a three-hit shutout at visiting Clarkston (5-12, 4-12), striking out 12, as Shadle Park (16-1, 15-1) took a 7-0 victory to stay atop the GSL standings. Skillingstad raised her record to 9-1. … Kim Loberg pitched a two-hitter as West Valley (5-13, 5-12) rolled to a 16-5 victory at Cheney (4-14, 4-13) in a game between Class 3A playoff contenders. Hailey Bauman was 4 for 4 with two RBIs and four runs for the Eagles while teammates Lindsay Hood and Chelsea Hammerstrom were both 3 for 4. … Ashley Mayhle smacked a two-run double in the third to spark Central Valley (11-7, 11-7) to a 6-4 victory at Rogers. The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but Jamie Taxter evened the game for the Pirates (7-11, 7-10) by belting a two-run homer in the home half of the inning. … Laurie Biviano earned her first victory of the season as Ferris took a 9-5 win over visiting Lewis and Clark (2-14, 2-14). The Saxons (1-18, 1-17) got a 3-for-3 performance from Courtney Patrick, who scored twice and drove in a run. Lauren Viau added an RBI triple for Ferris.
