Randy James, biology teacher at North Central High School, received the 14th annual Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence on May 10 from Amgen Inc., the world’s leading biotechnology company.

“ Marcel Kopplin, Spokane Community College commercial baking instructional technician, placed fourth during a cake competition held in Chicago April 16-18, which was sponsored by the Retail Bakers Association.

“ Sarah Benson and Laura Foust were recently names outstanding seniors in the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences at Washington State University.

Benson received the award for apparel, merchandising, design and textiles. She is the daughter of Margret and Henry Benson of Chattaroy, and a 2003 graduate of Riverside High School.

Foust, a 1992 graduate of East Valley High School and the daughter of Grace and Kenneth Stumpff of Spokane, received the award for human development through the distance degree program.

Michael Madden, a student at Spokane Falls Community College, has recently received a nine month teacher’s assistantship and will teach conversational English in Versailles, France, during the 2005-06 school year.

“ Members of the Spokane Community College’s Agriculture Club recently competed in the National Postsecondary Competition in Albany, N.Y. Winners are listed by category and placement:

College Bowl: Spokane Community College Team 3 (Ginger Gomez, Kevin Egan, Penn Norris, Aric Van Tassel, Steve Kay), second place.

“ The following Spokane residents graduated from Azusa Pacific University during spring commencement. Graduates are listed with their degrees: Derek Wohlers, Bachelor of Arts, physical education; Jeffrey Huston, B.A., art; Nicole Huston, B.A., business administration; and Nolan Wilson, B.A., business administration.

“ Whitworth College’s student newspaper, The Whitworthian, was recently recognized with several awards during the 2005 Greater Northwest Student Journalism Awards. The publication received the Outstanding Achievement in Student Journalism Award, placed first for general excellence in the college division and won the title of Best Program in the college division.
