Embrace your quirks with No-Fi

It’s been a long minute since the quirky husband and wife karaoke-funk-duo No-Fi Soul Rebellion paid Spokane a visit.

No-Fi’s mastermind Mark Heimer still has the conglomerate uni-failure look with his black plastic goggle- glasses, shirt and tie and the generic basketball jersey he’s been rocking since way before hip-hop popularized the throwbacks.

Heimer’s wife, Andrea, still straps on the Soul Machine, an intentionally cheesed-out augmented bass wired into a CD player – Mark’s invention to provide the ultimate karaoke experience.

And the Heimers continue to crank out kitchen-recordings of R&B cut with hip-hop, funk, soul and indie rock, the latest concoction being the “Lambs to the Slaughter” EP released in early March on Wantage USA Records.

The only significant change has been in No-Fi’s headquarters. The Rebellion now is residing in Bellingham, after spending a couple of years building a solid reputation out of Missoula.

Mark Heimer said No-Fi is working the strong all-ages scene in Bellingham, which is different from the bar crowd he’s used to. He also is finishing No-Fi’s fifth album, tentatively titled “Alaska Chic.”

“I’m starting to figure out my own voice and sound. Every time I record it’s a learning process,” he said during a telephone interview. “On our early material each song could have been on a different album. There was sort of a mixtape mentality. All the new stuff has a more cohesive feel.”

Mark Heimer said he and Andrea will debut new material when No-Fi Soul Rebellion returns tonight at 9:30 to The B-Side, 230 W. Riverside Ave. Also on the bill is Missoula’s The Original Booty Burglars and Spokane blues rockers The Longnecks. There is a $5 cover.

Fall into Schierman

When you see the music listing for Fall Forever with Nate Scheirman, don’t get it twisted. Spokane singer Schierman has not joined a new band, nor has the lineup of his contemporary rock band been altered.

Scheirman explains the name change in an e-mail:

“The Nate Schierman Band immediately gets compared to Dave Matthews Band. Dave Matthews is not actually one of my main influences. I’m more into Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes, Delirious?, Darin Schaffer, Tonic, and Postal Service – although there is some Dave here and there in the music. I think the same can be said for anyone who picks up an acoustic guitar these days. Just like all of us have a little bit of the Beatles in us.

“Secondly we never wanted the Nate Schierman Band. When we signed to Innovative Records in 2003 the label knew that I was going to be doing a lot of shows as ‘Nate Schierman’ solo – so when we would go back into a city and tour as ‘The Nate Schierman Band’ it would simply be name recognition.

” ‘Fall Forever’ is a name we can stand behind – and you can pronounce it easily and most likely not spell it wrong. Even my own girlfriends have spelled my name wrong, so this will be nice.”

The Nate Schierman – err – Fall Forever appears at the Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society tonight at 8 at Greyhound Park in Post Falls. All ages are welcome to attend the benefit show, which is helping ACS meet its goal of raising $125,000, according to Schierman.

Catch Fall Forever on Saturday at 9 p.m. at the Blue Dolphin, 16 S. Robie Road. Tickets are $3, through TicketsWest, (800) 325-SEAT or www.ticketswest.com.

Club hoppin’

Pretty Girls Make Graves has canceled its show scheduled for tonight at Fat Tuesday’s, 109 W. Pacific Ave.

Showtime is 7 p.m. There is a $5 cover.

Pretty Girls Make Graves likely will schedule a makeup date at Fat Tuesday’s for later this summer, Dupree said.

The local rock showcase continues at Fat Tuesday’s on Saturday with a roster that reads like a RAWK Final Four all-star lineup: Willoughby, The Electrostatics, Intermission and For Years Blue. Showtime is 7 p.m. Tickets are $4 in advance, $5 at the door, through Fat Tuesday’s.
