Lake City girls cruising at regional track and field meet

Two-time defending state champion Lake City threatened to run away with the girls 5A Region I track and field meet at Lewiston, scoring 61 points – 50 more than second-place Coeur d’Alene with today’s sprint finals still to be contested.

Lake City won all eight finals contested Thursday.

The Timberwolves were led by a pair of double winners. Sophomore Brenna Lawson won the triple jump with a leap of 31 feet, 7 inches, and cleared 9-6 to capture the pole vault. Teammate Jamie Tart won both throws.

Lewiston, in search of a fifth consecutive boys regional title, held a three-point lead on Lake City after day one.

The Bengals won all three jumps.

He top three finishers in each event and the winning team in each relay advance to next week’s state meet, which will be contested Thursday and Friday at Boise State University.

Moscow held an eight-point lead over Post Falls at the 4A Region I girls meet, also at Lewiston.

Junior Kelsey Taylor led the Bears by sweeping the shot put and discus. Taylor went 38-11 1/2 in the shot and 125-8 in the discus.

Post Falls’ Leslie Pulley turned in the top mark of the first day, clearing a school record 11-0 to win the pole vault, improving her personal best mark by six inches.

Moscow’s lead in the boys meet was even closer – three points ahead of Sandpoint, 36-33.

Sandpoint’s Eric DeMers won the triple jump while teammate Brian Resso swept the shot put and discus.

The top two individuals and the top relay team qualify for the state meet.
