WV”s Brian Peterson hits grand slam into street

They may have to erect a monument on Washington Street after the launch by West Valley freshman baseball player Brian Peterson against North Central on Wednesday.

Peterson hit a mammoth grand slam home run over the right-field fence at NC that landed in the middle of Washington Street and ignited the Eagles’ 11-2 triumph.

The victory, between the top two 3A Greater Spokane League baseball teams, temporarily put WV a game up for the No. 1 regional playoff berth.

The Eagles lost 3-1 Thursday to Mt. Spokane, and NC won. They needed a win Friday to assure top spot in regionals.

Peterson’s blow capped a seven-run third-inning outburst. It was more than enough for pitcher Greg Bradley, who parlayed a wicked breaking pitch for no-hit ball into the fifth inning.

WV (12-7, 11-6) peppered the Indians with 16 hits, three by Peterson, who drove in five runs, three by Mike Hauschild, including a triple and home run, and three doubles by Phil Gannon.

East Valley (11-8, 10-7), with its 7-5 win over Shadle Park, moved to within a game of WV and NC.

Central Valley (11-9, 9-9) upset Ferris 4-3 and secured a spot in the 4A district playoffs beginning Wednesday at Avista Stadium.

Stuart Harris hit an RBI double in the top of the seventh for the winner after the Bears scored three times in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead. Zach Evans worked a scoreless seventh inning in relief of Jake Swantko. Scott Froelich and Matt Rodriguez each had two hits.

University (11-7, 11-6) won its eighth and ninth straight games to finish at least fourth in the GSL.

Track places determined

East Valley finished third and Central Valley fourth on Thursday during the season-ending league placing boys track meets.

The Knights and Bears both lost to Mead and Mt. Spokane, and EV beat CV 78½-66½ to determine the final places.

Chris Shearer at 186-6 javelin and 6-6 in the high jump and Tyler Jolley at 52-feet-3½ in the shot put were individual winners, and EV’s 400-relay team in 43.8 also won. CV’s Luke Perkins and Derek Schuh split 100 and 200 meter victories.

West Valley won the meet over University in the meet for ninth-through-14th places. Eagles Rashad Toussaint won long and triple jumps, Arton Toussaint won the high jump, Kevin Lemieux the discus and Curtis Fitzhugh the 800, in 1:59.2.

U-Hi’s Kellen Lewis ran the open 400 in 50.1 and came right back for fourth in the 300 hurdles. He earlier had placed second in the high hurdles. Justin Cooper won the 200 and was third in both the 100 and 300 hurdles, and Mike Kelley won the shot put.

In girls meets, EV finished sixth, CV eighth, U-Hi 10th and WV last.

In the meet for fifth through eighth places at EV, Knight Lyndzie Johnson won a battle of 40-foot shot putters. Her 40-10½ effort topped Mead’s Huchinson sisters, Corissa and Ashley, who also better 40 feet.

Teammate Jo E. Mayer won the 3,200 as did EV’s 400-relay team.

Central Valley’s Anna Layman ran 25.9 for 200 meters, Adrienne Duval was the 400 winner and Hailey Ficklin cleared 5-3 to win the high jump.

At University, in the meet for ninth through 14th, the Titans’ Karen Owens won at 1,600 meters, Victoria Benson had two seconds, including a 15.8 100 hurdles effort, and a third.

West Valley’s Larsen Agee won the 3,200 meters. and Emily Sasse joined a five-person 40-foot shot put club, finishing second at 40-1½.

Knights play for survival

A heart-breaking shootout loss to Mid-Valley champion Hanford in the first round of 3A regional soccer leaves East Valley needing three wins to qualify for state.

The Knights host Sunnyside today and if victorious would be on the road thereafter, beginning Tuesday.

They and the Falcons were tied 1-1 after regulation and two overtimes before the hosts converted three shootout goals to EV’s two.

West Valley’s season ended with a 2-0 loss Thursday at home against Prosser.

University’s soccer season ended in the loser-out first round of District 8 4A Tournament, 4-1 to Ferris.

With U-Hi trailing 2-0, Keith Realing scored 16 minutes into the second half, but the Saxons countered five minutes later and added insurance with five minutes left in the match.

Grassl leads Trailhead

Trailhead Ladies Club golfer Betty Grassl had the week’s best score, shooting 48 in A flight.

Harriet Carbon in B with 59, and Patty Haskins in C and no-handicap golfer Bobbie Parent, each with 61, were other low gross flight winners.

Net leaders for the day were Marcia Rowley with 33 in A, Genevra Barrett with 34 in B and Grace Libby with 32 in C.

Same song, next verse

It was Karen Strauss business as usual during this past week’s Liberty Lake Ladies 9-Hole golf competition.

Strauss’ first-flight 48 took low gross honors for the group.

Sadie Rueckert shot 61 in second flight, and Barbara Gunderson had 66 in third.

There were 40s aplenty for net winners Arla Beck and Audrey Vanos in first flight, Nancy Smith in second, and Lu Benjamin and Wilma Capaul in third all sharing the same score.

Capaul, Nancy Lampe and Linda Barry all had chip-ins.

Hangman best ball

Hangman Valley Ladies 18-Hole golfers used a blind draw to determine three-person best ball teams for weekly competition.

The trio of Diane Joss, Kitty Duval and Kathy Schneider teamed for a winning score of 65
