Abramson, Funkhouser score during Knights” win at soccer regional

Cole Abramson headed in the first goal and assisted on the other as East Valley defeated visiting Sunnyside 2-0 in Saturday’s 3A regional boys soccer play.

The Knights (12-3) will play West Valley-Yakima at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Central Valley in another loser-out match. WV-Yakima eliminated Prosser 3-1.

Abramson scored at 63 minutes after Torrey Riley dribbled to the end line and crossed a pass over the goalkeeper’s head. Abramson’s pass at 72 minutes set up Ben Funkhouser’s breakaway goal.

Josh Peck recorded the shutout with help from defender Kyle Gillespie, who held Junior Garcia (100 career goals) in check.

Baseball

Davenport earned the right to host a Thursday subdistrict by defeating Odessa 5-4 and Almira/Coulee-Hartline 4-3 during a four-way Bi-County League tiebreaker at Ritzville. Davenport (15-7), the second seed, will play the winner between Bi-Co No. 4 Reardan (12-8) and the Panorama No. 3. The same day, the Panorama No. 2 will host a subdistrict and play the winner between Bi-Co No. 3 ACH (11-8) and the Panorama No. 4. Bi-Co No. 1 Lind-Ritzville (19-1) and the Panorama No. 1 have opening byes. … Panorama seeding will be determined Monday at Kettle Falls. Northport and Republic will meet to determine the top two seeds. In loser-out games, Springdale will meet Cusick, and St. Michael’s will play St. George’s. The winners will play for the third and fourth seeds.

Nick Collison (10-0) and Ajay Miltner combined on a five-inning no-hitter in the first game as Newport swept visiting Colfax 10-0, 9-0 to complete a 12-0 Northeast A League season. The Grizzlies are 19-0 overall.

Softball

Jordan Monasmith (10-4) pitched a three-hitter and went 2 for 4 in the opener of Chewelah’s 5-3, 5-2 sweep of visiting Pullman (6-10, 3-7) in the Great Northern League. Bryn Smith’s two-run triple started a five-run sixth for the Cougars (11-7, 7-5) in the second game. Chewelah’s Kelsey Schalock went 3 for 4 in the opener. … Colville’s doubleheader at Riverside was rained out and rescheduled for 3 p.m. Monday.

Track and field

Newport’s boys, on the strength of their runners, and Pullman’s girls, with jumpers and throwers, won team titles at the Connell Invitational. Newport scored 96.33 points behind the efforts of Tony Yeaw, who won the 100-meter dash and placed second in the 200; Tony Thelin, who won the 1,600; and Justin Emel, who swept the hurdles. Yeaw and Emel were also part of the winning 400 relay. Danielle Haynes won the long jump and placed second in the triple jump to teammate Lexie Fairbanks, and Krystal Smith won the discus and placed second in the shot put to lead Pullman to 112.5 points. Justin Carstensen of Almira/Coulee-Hartline won the boys long jump and triple jump. Riverside’s Angela Hartill captured the girls shot put and hammer, and placed second in the discus.
