Reality fans will want to stay glued to TVs this summer

Mike Hughes Gannett News Service

When Fox’s “Hell’s Kitchen” debuts May 30, it will trigger a run of summer reality shows.

Cable, of course, is stuffed with reality. But this year, the broadcast networks will also be overloaded.

So far, more than a dozen reality series with new summer episodes have been announced. That includes competitions in dancing, cooking, and songwriting.

There are shows about lawyers and aspiring rock stars, and two series pairing beautiful women and ordinary guys – or three, if you count “Britney and Kevin: Chaotic,” which debuted Tuesday on UPN.

Here’s the list so far, with premiere dates (subject to change):

• May 30: “Hell’s Kitchen,” 9 p.m., Fox. Gordon Ramsay, a sometimes-angry master chef, rules a 12-person competition.

• June 1: “Beauty and the Geek,” 8 p.m., WB. Ashton Kutcher produces a sort of “Average Joe Jr.,” pairing beautiful women and brainy men. A $250,000 prize is at stake.

• June 1: “Dancing With the Stars,” 9 p.m., ABC, following “Supernanny” reruns at 8. Six celebrities pair with professionals for a ballroom competition.

• June 2: “Hit Me Baby One More Time,” 9 p.m., NBC. This three-week quickie has songwriters performing their favorites, with the audience picking a winner.

• June 6: “The Scholar,” 8 p.m., ABC. Ten high school students compete for a full scholarship to the college of their choice – worth an estimated $240,000.

• June 7: “Fire Me … Please,” 9 p.m., CBS. Contestants try to figure a way to get fired; the winner gets $25,000 in this hidden camera show.

• June 9: “The Cut,” 8 p.m., CBS. Tommy Hilfiger picks a star fashion designer.

• June 21: “I Want to Be a Hilton,” special two-hour premiere, 8 p.m., NBC (later moves to 9 p.m.). Kathy Hilton, Paris and Nikki’s mother, sifts hopefuls. One will spend a year living like a Hilton (whatever that means). Oh, and the winner gets “an extravagant prize package” and a $200,000 trust fund.

• June 28: “Average Joe 4,” 8 p.m., NBC. Eighteen regular guys pursue a redhead.

• July 7: “Big Brother,” 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, CBS. It’s the sixth year for this claustrophobic “Real World” rip-off.

• July 11: “Rock Star: INXS,” airing at 9:30 p.m. Mondays, 10 p.m. Tuesdays and 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays on CBS. Producer Mark Burnett (“Survivor”) searches for a new lead singer for the Australian rock group.

• July 20: “So You Think You Can Dance,” 8 p.m., Fox. It’s a dance competition from the “American Idol” folks.

• July 28: “The Law Firm,” 9 p.m., NBC. Producer David E. Kelley (“L.A. Law,” “The Practice”) will use real lawyers and judges, with binding decisions. The top lawyer wins $250,000.

• July (details pending): ABC returns “Wife Swap”; ABC Family launches “Brat Camp” (troubled teens sent to wilderness camp) and “Welcome to the Neighborhood” (seven families compete with cul-de-sac neighbors deciding which one wins a house).

• Aug. 3: “Meet Mister Mom,” 8 p.m., NBC. Mothers get a surprise vacation and leave their husbands to run the house and watch the kids.

• Aug. 9: “The Biggest Loser,” 8 p.m., NBC. The weight-loss show returns and will continue into the fall season.

• Aug. 9: “Tommy Lee Goes to College,” 9:30 p.m., NBC. The Motley Crue rocker goes to the University of Nebraska.
