For now, Kylie needs to take it one life at a time

Kylie Minogue had a cancerous lump successfully removed from her breast and doctors are confident they caught the disease early enough to prevent it spreading. However, her follow-up treatment may force the Australian pop star and her boyfriend to postpone their plans to have a child.

The 36-year-old singer underwent surgery Friday afternoon at a hospital in her home town of Melbourne.

The illness has forced her to cancel a planned Australian tour.

The Daily Telegraph newspaper in Sydney printed a photo Monday of Minogue wearing dark glasses and holding boyfriend Olivier Martinez‘s hand as she left a Melbourne hospital.

Martinez, a French actor, was quoted in New Idea magazine as saying the couple had been planning to have a child.

“We were going to start working on it after the tour was over,” he said. “Now it will be put off; not forever – we pray and hope – but for the time being.”

Zen and the art of supermodel maintenance

Czech supermodel Petra Nemcova returned to Thailand to thank doctors and nurses who helped her recover from serious injuries sustained when the tsunami struck the resort island of Phuket.

Nemcova – whose boyfriend, British fashion photographer Simon Atlee, was killed by the giant waves – clung to a palm tree for nearly eight hours before being rescued. She spent three weeks in a southern Thailand hospital being treated for injuries to her pelvis.

While being evacuated from Phuket, where the wave swept through the couple’s beach hut, a fellow victim gave Nemcova a necklace with a Buddhist amulet.

“I have worn it till this day,” she said.

Perhaps looking to capitalize on that “new mom” glow, Estee Lauder has named Gwyneth Paltrow as one of the faces of the makeup and fragrance brand.

The Oscar-winning actress, who signed a multiyear contract, will first appear in a new global ad campaign to begin this holiday season for Pleasures fragrance.

The 32-year-old Paltrow and her husband, Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin, celebrated the first birthday of their daughter, Apple, on May 14.

And go to my movies and help me pay these bills

Tom Hanks told Vassar College graduates Sunday that whether it’s battling gridlock in Southern California or making sense of the world, said any problem can be solved as long as people are willing to help.

“Help plant trees,” said Hanks, whose daughter, Elizabeth, was among the 670 graduates. “Help embrace diversity and celebrate difference. Help stop gridlock.”

But it still ended up for the birds

Shirley Jones finally has received the college degree that was delayed by a 50-plus-year career on Broadway, in movies and portraying the rock ‘n’ roll mom to television’s “Partridge Family.”

Jones, 71, received an honorary degree at Washington & Jefferson College’s graduation ceremony Saturday.

“I wanted to become a veterinarian. As God would have it, I was given another path to follow,” Jones said.
