Idaho’s Winger takes 2nd in shot

University of Idaho sophomore Russ Winger placed second in the men’s shot put Friday at the NCAA West Regional track and field meet at Eugene, Ore.

Winger threw 63 feet, 2 3/4 inches to qualify for the NCAA National Championships, June 8-11 at Sacramento, Calif.

Winger also placed seventh in the discus (181-4).

Idaho’s Mary Kamau qualified for today’s finals in the women’s 1,500.

Also at the meet, Washington State sophomore Drew Ulrick (Mead High) threw a career-best 182-4 in the men’s discus to place sixth. WSU’s Tamara Diles tied for eighth in the women’s pole vault at 12-11 3/4 .

Cougars who qualified for today’s finals were: James McSwain, men’s 100; Haley Paul, women’s 1,500; John Cassleman (Pullman High), men’s 400 hurdles; and the 400 relay team, which includes McSwain.

Eastern Washington’s Zach Guydish placed eighth in the men’s javelin (208-8). EWU’s Brandon Wilson advanced to today’s 400 hurdles final.

•Community Colleges of Spokane swept the team titles at the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges championships at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Ore.

Led by high-point athlete Molly Burt, the Sasquatch women scored 181 points for a 25-point gap on Lane CC.

The CCS men, powered by distance runners, ran away with the title, scoring 236 points for a 76-point gap on Highline CC and Lane.

Burt won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.60 seconds, captured the 400 hurdles in 1:04.53 and placed seventh in the 200. Teona Perkins of the Sasquatch ran 2:12.62 to win the 800.

CCS men’s winners were: Jason Dixon, shot put, 49-10; Andrew Fuller, 3,000 steeplechase, 9:35.37; Nick Siebert, 1,500, 3:59.58; and Shae Murray, javelin, 211-10.

•First-day leader Danielle Ayers-Stamper of Seattle Pacific finished second in the heptathlon at the NCAA Division II meet at Abilene (Texas) Christian University.

Ayers-Stamper (LaCrosse-Washtucna High) finished with 5,606 points, 174 behind national leader Anastassia Kyvelidou of Nebraska-Omaha. Kyvelidou took control by winning the long jump and javelin, and finishing third in the 800. Ayers-Stamper, who won two events on Thursday, had the third-best mark in the javelin, and the fourth-best marks in the long jump and 800.

Angelo State’s Alissa Miller (CCS) placed third with 5,166 points.

Ayers-Stamper also ran 14.10 in preliminaries to qualify for today’s final in the 100 hurdles. Miller (14.55) didn’t qualify.

•Whitworth freshman Brandon Howell (Clarkston High) ran his 800 heat in 1:55.39 and didn’t qualify for today’s finals at the Division III Championships at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.

In the women’s 800, Willamette’s Alicia Andrews (Asotin High) ran the second-fastest time (2:14.44) in her heat to qualify for today’s finals.

Baseball

Travis Buck (Richland High) went 3 for 4 with two doubles, two stolen bases and three runs to lead 22nd-ranked Arizona State (32-22, 13-9) to an 8-2 win over Washington State (21-35, 1-21) in Pacific-10 Conference play at Packard Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.

WSU’s Kaeo Rubin and Jay Miller had two-out RBI doubles in the third.

•Travis Bertholf (7-2) threw his fifth complete game and CCS posted a 4-3 win over Edmonds (37-8) at the NWAACC tournament at Lower Columbia College in Longview, Wash.

The Sasquatch (32-12) and the host Red Devils (37-5), the last undefeated teams at the tournament, will meet at 7 tonight for a spot in the championship round of the double-elimination event.

•Tim Lincecum (8-6) took a no-hitter into the seventh and freshman Matt Hague went 4 for 5 as Washington (31-22, 10-12 Pac-10) notched a 6-0 win over UCLA (15-39, 4-18) at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles.

Basketball

Entries will be accepted for the Hoopfest 3-on-3 street tournament through the Memorial Day weekend. Teams are encouraged to sign up online ( www.spokanehoopfest.net), but paper entries that arrive in the Hoopfest office by Tuesday will also be accepted.
