Memorial Day rites planned

In honor of Memorial Day, there will be services held Monday throughout the area, including:

Spokane

“ 9 a.m. at Fort Wright Cemetery on Government Way north of Fort George Wright Drive. Service by Airway Heights Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3386 and Washington Air National Guard’s 141st Air Refueling Wing.

“ 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Cemetery, 7200 N. Wall. Mass with Msgr. John Steiner officiating.

“ 10 a.m. at Spokane Memorial Gardens, 5909 S. Cheney-Spokane Road. Service by Spokane Elks Lodge No. 228.

“ 11:30 a.m. at Fairmount Memorial Park, 5200 W. Wellesley Ave. Program by Spokane VFW Post 51 and Marine Corps League of Spokane. Wreaths will be placed at Iwo Jima Memorial. Bring lawn chairs.

“ 3 p.m. at southeast corner of Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. A moment of silence will be observed as part of the National Moment of Remembrance, which was established by Congress and asks Americans to pause in a moment of national unity. Retired Army Lt. Col. John Phillip Kowzan will play taps.

Spokane Valley

“ 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, 17825 E. Trent. Mass by Bishop William Skylstad.

“ Noon at Pines Cemetery, 1402 S. Pines Road. Service by Spokane Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1435.

Western Spokane County

“ 10 a.m. at VFW Post 3386, 1307 S. Loffler St. in Airway Heights. Service by the post and the Washington Air National Guard’s 141st Air Refueling Wing.

“ 10 a.m. march from Cheney City Hall, 609 2nd Ave., to Fairview Cemetery on Salnave Road for service at cemetery. Sponsored by Cheney American Legion Post 72. Public is welcome to take part in march, service and a breakfast that starts at 8 a.m. at City Hall.

“ 10:30 a.m. at Medical Lake Cemetery, on Thorpe Road east of Ritchey Road. Service by American Legion.

Southern Spokane County

“ 10:45 a.m. at Latah Cemetery east of Latah on Knight Road. Service by Rockford VFW Post 7814.
