Washington keeps big-time prospect Hawes in Seattle

SEATTLE – This time, Washington’s Lorenzo Romar got the big-time player away from North Carolina’s Roy Williams.

Two years after Williams swooped into Romar’s back yard and recruited Marvin Williams from Bremerton High School, Romar kept 6-foot-11 center Spencer Hawes in Seattle.

Hawes, nephew of former Washington and 10-year NBA forward Steve Hawes, was among four players in Washington’s 2006 recruiting class Wednesday, along with forwards Quincy Pondexter and Phil Nelson, and guard Adrian Oliver.

“These four guys are completely different in what they bring to the table,” Romar said.

Hawes is headed into his senior season at Seattle Prep. He was heavily recruited by Roy Williams and the defending NCAA champion Tar Heels.

When Marvin Williams made his college choice, he selected North Carolina over Washington. North Carolina won the NCAA Tournament last season.

Women’s coach June Daugherty announced three prep standouts had signed national letters of intent for UW.

UW will add a Washington prep star in 5-9 guard Sara Mosimon from King’s, a two-time first-team all-state selection. She was picked as MVP at the 2005 State 2A tournament.

The other recruits are Laura McLellan, a 6-foot-2 post player from Leigh High School in Campbell, Calif., and Sami Whitcomb, a 5-10 guard from Buena Vista High School in Ventura, Calif.
