Han leads fog-delayed LPGA Office Depot

Associated Press

Hee-Won Han of South Korea shot a 3-under 68 for a three-shot lead after two rounds of the fog-delayed LPGA Office Depot Championship on Saturday at Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.

Han had a two-day total of 133 after a career-best 65 in the opening round.

“We were just waiting, waiting, waiting,” Han said.

Veteran Tina Barrett shot a 5-under 66, and former Southern California star Jennifer Rosales had a 1-under 70, tying for second at 136.

Swedes Eva Dahllof and Maria Hjorth, and Jamie Hullett each shot 69 and were tied for third at 137.

Two-time defending champion Annika Sorenstam had a 70 and was six strokes back at 139.

Seventy-two players — more than half the 143-player field — were stranded by approaching darkness and will complete the second round today.

First-round co-leader Wendy Ward of Edwall, Wash., was at 6-under through nine holes of the second round.

Dense fog delayed the start of play Saturday by 3 1/2 hours.

Fog blanketed the new Trump National course along the Pacific Ocean, making holes disappear.

“We sat in the clubhouse and watched the fog roll out and back in,” Barrett said.

Play was suspended about 25 minutes early Saturday because the fog rolled back in and reduced the daylight. The last group of the day had finished one hole when they were called in.

Today’s forecast called for dense fog in the morning, which could force a Monday finish to the 54-hole event.

“It’s very difficult to see us finishing on time,” LPGA tournament official Angus MacKenzie said.

PGA Tour

K.J. Choi shot a 5-under-67 and D.J. Trahan shot 66 to tie for the lead after the third round of the Chrysler Classic of Greensboro, N.C.

Jason Bohn and Shigeki Maruyama were at 15-under, one shot back.

Choi, who began the day one shot off the lead, fell three shots back early in the round before birdieing the 12th, 13th and 16th holes at Forest Oaks Country Club. Trahan tied him thanks to an eagle on the 16th and a birdie on 17.

World No. 6 Sergio Garcia, the highest-ranked golfer in the field, shot 31 on the front nine but finished with a bogey and four pars for a 66. He is 12-under.

Champions Tour

R.W. Eaks moved a step closer to his first win on the Champions Tour, shooting a 6-under 66 to take a one-stroke lead into the final round of the SAS Championship in Cary, N.C.

Eaks made four birdies over the final eight holes at the 7,177-yard Prestonwood Country Club, putting the 53-year-old in position for his first professional victory since the 1997 San Jose Open on what is now the Nationwide Tour.

“I’m excited. I can’t wait until tomorrow,” said Eaks, who has not led going into the final round of any tournament since 1997. “I wish we could go play right now.”

Eaks is at 11-under for the tournament, one stroke ahead of Bob Gilder, who also shot 66 on Saturday. Tom Jenkins posted a 65 to get to third place at 9-under.
