Gonzaga claims seventh consecutive soccer win

Freshman Lauren Dascenzo’s goal with 32 seconds remaining in the second overtime period lifted the Gonzaga University women’s soccer team to a 3-2 victory over host Eastern Washington Tuesday afternoon.

With the win, the Bulldogs (9-2-1) have increased their program-best win streak to seven and are off to their best start in program history.

Jennie Summers got things started for the Eagles when she took a rebound off of Kerstyn Dolack’s shot and put the ball in the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

GU responded at 18:50 when sophomore Nanda McCormick tallied her first of two goals on the day.

•Katlyn Laughlin scored in the 41st minute on an assist from Lindsey Jacobs as Community Colleges of Spokane defeated visiting North Idaho 3-1 in a non-conference matchup.

Katie Blood and Elizabeth Phillips added goals for CC Spokane (9-2-3) in the second half. Deanna Zimmerman scored the Cardinals’ (6-6) lone goal.

Men’s soccer

Garga Caserta scored in the 59th minute to lead North Idaho to a 1-0 non-conference victory over host CCS.

The Cardinals (10-1-3) outshot the Sasquatch 13-7. Goalkeeper Ryan Allen recorded eight saves for CCS (4-7-3).

Volleyball

Haley Larsen led all players with 20 kills as host Idaho defeated Gonzaga 3-1.

Meghan Brown added 12 kills for the Vandals (9-7) and teammate Sarah Loney had 10 kills.

Three Bulldogs (9-8) finished with double-digit kills in the losing effort, led by Becky Jones who finished with 15 kills.

•Natalie Danielson of Whitworth College was named Northwest Conference player of the week.

The senior middle blocker, a transfer from the CC Spokane, led the Pirates to road victories at the University of Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran University with 37 kills and 11 blocks.

Men’s golf

Bobby Elder of Whitworth won the Northwest Conference Fall Tournament at Lake Spanaway (Wash.) Golf Course with a two-round total of 148.

The Pirates also won the team title with a two-day total of 603.

•Washington’s James Lepp placed second at the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge at the Glen Club in Glenview, Ill., to help the Huskies to a fifth-place finish.

Alex Prugh (Ferris) finished tied for 46th with three-round total of 222.

Women’s golf

The University of Idaho’s Renee Skidmore fired her third consecutive even-par round (216 total) to finish one stroke behind individual winner Emily Hoeper of Denver University at the Heather Farr Memorial Invitational at Broomfield, Colo.

Anastasia Kostina of Washington State tied for third at 2-over 218.

Denver won the team title with 884, 13 strokes better than runner-up Fresno State. Washington State was fifth (905), one stroke better than Idaho. Eastern Washington was 12th (942), while Gonzaga finished 17th (987).

Mary Kate Morgan shot 228 to finish tied for 23rd as Gonzaga’s best finisher. Eastern Washington’s top finisher was Sheena Prante, who tied for 45th at 234.

KIJHL

Lief Sherman’s two goals weren’t enough as the Spokane Braves lost 5-3 at Beaver Valley.

Chris Patina led Beaver Valley (3-2-1-1) with two goals.

Goalkeeper Jason Greenwell recorded 27 saves for Spokane (1-4-3-1).
