Fall Classic to resume

Paul Delaney Correspondent

If there’s someone who at least has somewhat of an inside track when it comes to success at the Fall Classic it would be Rick Schultz.

Schultz is the only Spokane driver to visit the winner’s circle, that coming in 1993. Thanks to Mother Nature, he and other area drivers get a do-over Sunday when the conclusion of the event takes place.

For the first time in 18 years, rain washed out Sunday’s 200-lap championship finale that pays the winner $13,000. The 200-lap championship race begins at 1 p.m. Sunday.

“You have to pay attention and be there at the end,” Schultz said. “Basically, you have to give up the first 100 laps.”

Schultz has run sparingly this season.

“We’ve struggled. We ran the first half of the season without any front brakes.” Since then that problem has been cured and last weekend Schultz qualified sixth on Friday, but fell to 15th by the time Sunday rolled around.

But starting mid-pack doesn’t mean Schultz is taking it easy.

“The top 20 drivers are separated by just five-tenths of a second.”

The Super Late Model race will start 36 cars.

“It won’t take long for the leaders to get into traffic,” said Schultz.

Friday’s Race of Champions saw Kevin Richards finish 11th, the highest of any local driver. Schultz was 15th.

On Saturday in the Limited Late Model A-Main, Dave Garber was fifth.

Kopp fifth at DuQuion

Joe Kopp of Mica,Wash., finished fifth in the race and third in the final 2005 AMA Ford Quality Checkered Flag Flat Track points race.

Kopp, who picked up two series wins this season, ended up a single point behind Ken Coolbeth. Chris Carr was a repeat winner of the 2005 championship.
