Fashion show to aid community center programs

Spokane Valley Community Center is hosting a fashion show, catered tea and holiday gift gallery on Nov. 12.

Season of Style Benefit, held inside Mirabeau Park Hotel’s grand ballroom, raises money for programs that help men, women and children with low income.

A fashion expert from Nordstrom will share advice on clothing that flatters different figure types. SVCC auxiliary members will model holiday fashions from Macy’s, Coldwater Creek and A.S.K. Clothing Co.

“We’re looking at anything from the casual slacks to the more formal attire for a business Christmas party,” said Anna Henry, a board member helping with the event.

Tables of eight are captained by volunteers who create a tea-party ambiance by providing centerpieces. Guests vote on the prize-winning table.

A marketplace will showcase fair trade artwork from Mexico, cashmere scarves, handmade jewelry, handbags, clothing and other attractive gifts.

A special section featuring foods and gifts will benefit area nonprofits, including Boy Scouts, Christ Kitchen and Ronald McDonald House. Admission to the market is $2.

Henry said SVCC hopes to raise more than $10,000 to support a variety of programs. The group receives limited government funding and relies on grants and donations from individuals and businesses to serve thousands of families, the majority of them working poor.

Last year, the center distributed over $150,000 in emergency assistance, including money for gas vouchers, prescriptions and utility bills.

Tickets sell for $27 each and can be purchased individually or as a table of eight or a corporate sponsorship.
